North v South 2010

Posted by: user81455 | Wed 12th Aug 2009 23:09 | Last Reply

Two questions.

Has the venue been announced?

The current enrolment for the comp is just for 80 golfers.  Last year it was 40 golfers for each team.  What happens if 60 Northerners and 20 Southerners sign up or vice versa?

Still 8 months to go and it's started already.....

....the South thinking they can win that is!

Only about 10 southerners turned up last time, Jon.  The rest of their team just thought they were form the South..

Jon, nothing confirmed, I am on the hunt for a venue for 2010.  The consensus from this year was to try and get a central venue that could then be used each year rather than the North/South change.  The plan is to look around J15 of the M1, I already have some courses in mind.

In terms of numbers players will get confirmed ensuring same team levels, so initially 2 teams of 16 then increase etc etc to ensure we do not get teams of 40 and 20

No rule about age all welcome.

And just to clarify any ambiguity.  Col and Si's record is unbroken and NOT unbeaten

I'd be very interested in this but Junction 15 of the M1 isn't in my view very central.

I would guess that it's at least 250 miles from my house in tyneside (about 4 or 5 hrs drive each way). Even further for anyone who wants to play from north of the border.

I would've thought that juctions 28-30 were much more central.

I appreciate it's difficult to organise an event like this, but that's my two pennys worth.

Graham,

I think it's central for the 'majority' of golfshake members. Were never going to get in central for everybody.

Most people that travel long distances to attend the event take up the excellent offer that golfbreaks.com provide for the NvS. They normally do B&B with 2 rounds for around £99 (I think that may even include entry into the NvS?)

You are correct of course, Chesterfield is the same distance from London as Tyneside is, this would make the halfway point of the country considerable further north than the north want it to be. It is because those who live south of Chestefield but north of Watford consider themselves northerners.

With wishing to state the obvious, the midlands is central.

I like the idea of a 2 day event with an overnight stay!! It would certainly mix things up a bit!! If it could be done for £99, what a bargain!

It may be obvious to youi, David, but feel that the dividing line is way to low.Birmingham is nearer to London than it is to Newcastle.

David,

The Midlands is only central to Southerners as anything beyond Watford is considered to be north.

Northampton is a lot further from me than it is from say Brighton (105 miles). From me it's 220 miles. God knows how far it is for our Scottish cousins!!!!

The East Midlands ie. Nottingham/Derby area is the most central part of the country.

Graham, I am with you on this, we have played three of these great matches so far and the dividing line for players has been much in favour of those from the North. Your dividing line is much fairer.

The North wants all the major towns of high population whilst we have only London of any size.

They only won the second event at Belton Woods because they gave us some very weak players to make the numbers up and then beat them handsomely.

Last year was a delightful experiece for us as we had no need to borrow anyone from the North and we quite literally trounced them.

Unless I'm missing a trick here, the East Midlands is still in the Midlands!

That does not mean that the Midlands is exactly halfway up the country.

What about the other ringers Darren. Don't forget, pride made you want to beat your brother. Yes, I agree, 2 and 1 was convincing.

The actual centre of England, according the Ordnance Survey is Lindley Hall Farm, near Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire (52°33′42.942″N 1°27′53.474″W; grid reference SP3637396143)

Which means that most of the people from Birmingham (actually just South of the Belfry) are Southerners, but not those from Norwich.....

Exactly Tim, the centre is much further north than Northampton and that doesn't even include Scotland at which point it would be nearer to Yorkshire.

Anyhow I haven't played in one of these before (but would like to next year) but since there is no even split between north and south. Then why is it not settled on a teams average score?

You don't understand what the N v S is all about Graham, you have to experience it.  There are no strict rules about ancestry here, a lot of the Northern team are actually Southerners by birth (me included) and vice versa.  It's more about where you think your roots are now.  I've played in all three so far and it's unique in it's rivallry and to be honest it doesn't matter which side you play for - the exiles seem to want to beat their compatriots even more...

Well Tim, it seems there is a grey area when it comes to north vs south.

However I come from a football background and you're either Sunderland or Newcastle. There is no middle ground lol.

I know it's golf but rivalry still exists.

The Midlands is the middle of England. Harrogate is the centre of Great Britain.

Penzance to Birmingham = 282miles

Newcastle to Birmingham = 211miles, but Berwick is a further 64miles away.

An even worse division in my opinion. the majority of the south coat is horizontal, Cornwall heads distinctly south and that fact alone distorts your figures. It would have been fairer to treat the lowest part of the south of england as Portsmouth or Southampton, especially when we are attempting to get sufficient players from each area to be able to travel to a neutral venue. The south team had no one from any of the western counties apart from David Marshall from Dorset, which has always made it difficult to get a full complement for the South Team. We only managed it last year because of the venue.

I posted on this last year.  The geographical split runs straight across the country from east to west, starting midway between Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft on the east coast, heading west along the line of the M6 as it passes North of Birmingham and extending out to Wales, passing just north of Newtown and reaching the coast at the mouth of the River Dyfi.  This puts Ipswich, Coventry and Birmingham in the South and Norwich, Leicester and Wolverhampton in the North - some interesting rivalries there!

I agree that the split needs addressing (currently I believe the split used runs from the mouth of the Humber to the mouth of the Severn) and the split I have outlined above is the true geographic split.  However, I can see that it would be difficult to make a change now after 3 years.

As regards location, given that Meriden is the agreed centre of the UK and the Forest of Arden is only 5 miles from it, perhaps that should be our venue.  I've heard that the 18th of the Arden course is a cracking finishing hole (the 18th of the Aylesford isn't too bad either)
