Is a stiff shaft modern equipment?

I don't want to open old arguments, but I just spent 10 mins reading an old thread, to find it had been locked.
So my question is. Are stiff shafts modern equipment?

So would you say if I'm slicing with a stiff shaft I could do with extra stiff?

From my point of view, the stiffer the shaft the straighter the shot however you'll lose distance.
