Stapleford Abbotts (Priors Course) is a lovely course, very good greens and fairways.

£21 a round at weekends (Mornings, cheaper if you play in the afternoons)

South Essex has three nine hole loops and is worth a visit.

Belfairs is a nice course.  Not sure what current green fees are but don't expect its expensive.  Especially nice at 6am on a sunny summer morning.

South Essex is good as Russ says but circa £27 a round weekends.

Depends exactly where you are looking Stephen.  As Martin says Essex is very large.

A course search on here for courses within 50 miles of Chelmsford gives 418 courses.

Nearest to Mersea will be Birch Grove, not P & P but friendly, shouldn't have any problem getting in.  5 lakes is two 18's, corporate, no problem.  Both about 20 mins max depending on tides.  Lexden Wood is P & P, is pretty good now, about 25 mins depending on time of day
