OMG played in a society for the first time yesterday

Posted by: user89993 | Sat 18th Apr 2009 08:27 | Last Reply

Hi, I played in the Sikh Golf Society yesterday at Chobham GC. Having never played with different/random people or in a society, I was in for a treat.

Firstly I thought it would be all Sikh players as it is the Sikh Golf Society. However when I got there, there were people from all walks of life. I was in the high HCP cat and therefore I and three others teed of last from the 10th tee at about 1ish.

The weather was not too great as it rained most of the time. Having never played stable ford rules I started bit confused, but my partner knew the rules which made it bit easier to understand.

I was only able to get 10 points on the back nine. The front nine was a disaster as we had three juniors in front of us and in front of them a four baler who were slow, which really slowed play.

I only manage to get 3 points in the front and scored a total of 13 points. I know I could have done better, however I don't think I played really well as I don't want to start blaming the weather or slow play as it was me hitting the ball. Next time I will be prepared for these kinds of conditions.

I look forward in the next Society which will be soon at the Ealing GC.

If anyone would like to share similar experience please do.

Thanks

It sounds like you enjoyed yourself and you are looking forward to the next event which is the main thing.  It is always difficult playing with people you haven't previously played with particulalry if a high'ish handicapper and combine that with poor weather and slow groups ahead it can make  it all terribly frustrating  - we've all been there.

I have found it great to play in societies and with new people.  It is how I've played all my golf over the last few years as I don't have any regular playing partners.  It can be intimidating but is mostly very rewarding.

Have fun at Ealing and update us in due course how you get on.

As a new golfer I remember how daunting it was to go for my first society game.

I had got used to playing with the same partners for my round of golf and to suddenly turn up on the first tee with three people who I'd never met before let alone play golf with was weird.

It is one of the rites of golf that once you have been playing social golf for a while that you then move onto the next level, either by joining a club or a society.

Then you start to play more competitions, and with playing partners you don't know.

Once you've played a few society games you'll get used to all of it and should enjoy it, I know I do.

There are occasions when you get a playing partner who does everything that you don't like, don't let it get to you and hope you don't get them in your group again!

Your golf should also improve as you've now left the security of playing with your regular partners and now have to do it with new ones.

Enjoy your golf.

Jagdeep,

Now you,ve broken the ice look out for the golfshake events and enter one.  I played the Belfry for my first and was very daunted the night before with all the banter that goes on I could only see disaster and embarassment the next day.  However when i finally got to play I found everyone I met friendly and supportive and having almost found the fairway with my first tee shot settled into a decent if unspectacular round.

What you actually mean there Jon is that everyone talks a good game the night before but they are as useless as each other on the day!

Only joking guys.
