Nearest the Pin / Longest Drive

Posted by: user40826 | Thu 26th Feb 2009 11:26 | Last Reply

Anybody know where I could buy markers for this part of our Golf Society matches?  Seen a couple but they are about £25.  Need to stop using an old scorecard and tee.  I may end up just making one!!

Wayne,

That's exactly what I did, but it took me a few attempts to get it right!!

Will report back.

You tried asking at the club Chris?  Most of them have some available.

At Doncaster last weekend they had an extra long flag stick (10 feet) with centimetres and inches marked on it.  Cracking idea!

Chris,

Most clubs will provide them but on some occasions they have wanted to charge in excess of £20!!!

I've not really got a problem with nearest the pin as nearly every player will have a chance of winning.

The longest drive is a waste of time in my opinion as it is won by the same four or five players each event.

Have you done a web search for markers, there must be somebody who makes them!  Or have a look for some metal workers, they should be able to make you a couple.

Most course have these items already, but I'm not sure if they come with the package or you have to hire them at an extra charge.

My club will put a white line right up the middle of the 18th fairway and they have a nearest to the center of the fairway comp.

Chris, I have researched in the past but mainly Corporate stuff for golfshake.com and best I found was an all in package for LD and NP, plus tee box markers for around £50

I've seen Wayne's idea before.

Maybe a gap in the market for any engineers, metal workers etc etc who frequent this site

How about a cheap tape rule with a nail taped to it for nearest the pin?  Don't care about longest drive unless it's measured in furthest from the fairway...

There's no longest drive at the Belfry comp for the same reason that Russ has mentioned above.  And that's coming from the person who won it at the Northern Cup.

Yes Chris, we are not all blessed with the ability to 'Boom' that ball out a long way.

But having a neartest to the center of the fairway gives everyone a chance.

The other one I like is nearest the pin in two on a Par 4 around 340-350 yards long.  Everyone has a chance of hitting the green in two but those with the more rounded game have the best chance of winning.

Some great ideas Gents, I have successfully drilled through an old Nike ball and I am currently creating the cards that will go with it.  Will look a little better than an old scorecard!

Maybe their is a niche in the market here..... hmmmm.

Oh and I like the idea for nearest the middle of the fairway.  I wondered why there was a line down the fairway at The Shropshire last year.

I work in a fibreglass plant and I make the markers from off cuts. Can be made any colour really but we tend to use a light grey. We send the markers out with the first group. If you are nearest the pin in the first group you write your name on the marker and stick it in. If someone beats this mark in a subsequent group, they cross the name out and put theirs on and move the marker to the new position. Same thing for longest drive. Last group bring them in. Won't rust and pencil just washes off with water, (well a bit off soap as well). Made loads of them but always forget to collect them off the last group. Lol. Good job they cost me nothing. If I find one I'll post a picture in case anyone wants any.

Chris,

At our society we have quite a lot of older gents who complained that they were never in the running for longest drive so we changed it to nearest the pin in 3 on a Par 5. Most people I think have a chance of being in with a chance on this.

John.

Dave....

I didn't say it had to be the fairway you were supposed to be playing...
