Treat myself to some new clubs
Finally decided to replace my beginner irons as they had the wrong shafts in them.
So I found a set of Mizuno mp60 Irons 3-PW with s300 shafts only played with once for £190 and got £80 off mine.
I then added a new 18" Tour Burner rescue too.
Does that seem cheap to you? did to me, and they are lovely to hit.
Bag now consists of;
Taylormade TourBurner Driver, TourBurner 3wood, TourBurner 18" 2Rescue
Mizuno MP60 Irons 3-PW
Titleist Vokey 52" and Nicklaus milled 56" wedges

NO holding you now, Stephen, although I am quite sure the expectations for The Belfry will now rise a notch.

I hope it will help me progress.
reg shaft irons are no good for swings in the high 80's - low 90's

At the price he got them, how could he refuse such a bargain. They will not be all that difficult to hit as he has a sound swing. Forged irons are nice to play with and he will not need to change them for many years.

my ball striking is pretty sound, its more my short game that holds me back, which is improving all the time.
They were £350 brand new but that was only 4-PW, and I also got more than deserved from my irons.
When on the moniter, they were almost as consistent as my old irons and when hit sweet went further with a better ball flight, how accurate it was I dont know, but a sweetly struck 4 iron carried 199 yds.
As for the shafts, they are great - alot heavier than i'm used to but I prefer that.
Do the brand new ones come with those shafts for £249? thats cheaper than they go for anywhere else.
I'll post a picture tomorrow to show the condition - they are as good as brand new I think.

Well we all know that it is not the equipment. don't we Paul.
I wonder what Dave L would think of your "so last year" remark now that he is playing with my twenty year old Mariman blades.
Incidently I have had to cry off the Conwy game next week-end as I am still not in a position to get round a golf course. Hoping that I can make The Belfry, that is the next target. Of course I will be expecting a much higher handicap for that game as I have not played since October.

"Snainton golf are doing them for £249 brand new John as there "soo last season dear" "
Just checked and for £250 you only get 5 - PW so equivelant for 3 - PW would be £333.

Perhaps I had better come to you for a lesson in using the driver then, Paul.

More rubbish from the expert, Mr Brown. In my days, every club on the rack was a pure blade and believe it or not we learned how to play the game.
Clubs will not make anyone a golfer it is the correct method that will do that. A good player can use any club.

I bought a set of Wilson Staff Pi5's for £149. They have 'X' Shafts.
Have I got the wrong things?

Are you suggesting that a person off 24 would not be able hit a set of muscleback clubs. We all had to when I started playing, blades were the only option.
I don't recommend any clubs to anyone on this forum as it is all personal choice.
I am also not your mate, as you probably have realised. You are a blessing in disguise, someone for me to have a good argument with.

I don't agree. after all the golfer has to get the face on the ball no matter what is stuck at the back of the club.
I suppose you will be telling me next that hese new metal woods go further than my old persimmons.
I was down the range tonight with Dennis and the pros at the range had a go with my old persimmons of 45 years and were amazed that they hit them just as far as they hit the metals.

Technology is a myth designed to sell new clubs year on year.

Yes, thats "Steel Dynamic X" shafts, very stiff.

The ball has been bigger for many many years now, even though I can remember the small ball. What we lost in length we gained with ease of shots around the green.
It is hard to compare distances for me as I do not play any of the course I used to when I could play the game, but I did go on google earth the other week and ulled upn a course where I could proabbaly coe up with how far I used to hit it.
The first hole at the public course in Enfield, Whitewebbs park was a down hill tee shot to a river about 25 feet wide ithen the hole went uphill to the green. I have only seen two people carry that river and one was Peter Garlick, the pro at the tiome and myself. Google earth showed that carry as 246 yards with a persimmon driver.
I play with some pretty powerful strikers these days at my club and on Golfshake and I think it would be fair to say that even these guys onnly get it out to 265 totat, when thney get hold of one.
You might be an exceptionally long hitter but if that is all you have got then it is no good to you.

There are many different schools of though on what is the best flight to have but myself, I took the trouble to learn how to hit the ball with the shape that is required for any particular shot. My natural shape was a slight draw but I am still capable of hitting a fade as it is an easier shot to produce to order.
I have never had a fast club head speed having always been a swinger as opposed to a hitter.

David,
You cant just summise that I cant strike the ball well enough to use these clubs - I have no problem hitting irons - When my H/C was issued it was my short game that needed more improvement, I have only played the game since July last year and have come on leaps and bounds.
I found these irons only very slightly less consistent than my own in the hour I was trialing them on the moniter in the shop. I hit one cracking 4 iron 204 yds which was the nail in the coffin.

You're definitely playing off your club handicap at the Belfry now Mr Falcus. 19.7 wasn't it?
Reply : Tue 17th Feb 2009 09:30
If only I could do it consistently :-(
My playing handicap is 20 Chris - I would not want anything more than that (even if it was the harshest award ever given as a handicap in the history of golf)
Reply : Tue 17th Feb 2009 09:53
No-one should play to their handicap every time Stephen; I play to mine once every six weeks or so. Usually I find I creep up slowly by around a shot or so before having a decent round and getting a cut. Your handicap is supposed to be a reflection of the best you can play under perfect conditions, so playing to it at this time of year is nigh on impossible.
Reply : Tue 17th Feb 2009 10:51
Thats the thing Chris - I have never played to it.
The best full rd I have had is 5 shots more than my handicap! Which is why it is so harsh IMO. I dont mind though - makes me look better than I am.

out of interest what does it mean by muscleback? whats the pro's and con's of such things....?
Reply : Tue 17th Feb 2009 11:18
Don't worry, Stephen, you have bought a very nice set of irons that will serve you well.
I have been told that as a 13 handicapper I am not qualified to give you the lesson you are wanting at The Belfry, but I am not taking any notice of an upstart who talks a good game but canot or is unwilling to substantiate anything.

Well said Jonny. You've pretty much said exactly what I was thinking but didn't know how to say it.
Reply : Tue 17th Feb 2009 11:24
Joke of the day, jonny P, loved it. I have not got a clue where the middle of a club is. You are not guilty of hitting poorly struck shots, you just need to concentrate more, you have an excellent swing.

I get it now.
Dont worry John - You are more than qualified to give me some tips thanks very much!!!
I hope they have the same effect on me as they did with you then Jonny.
