Frustrating Game!

Posted by: user20126 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Wed 11th Feb 2009 23:19 | Last Reply

Oh what a frustrating game golf is.....

I played today and along with my normal partner we were joined by two other members that he already knew.

We decided to play matchplay pairs, so my regular partner and I took on the two members I didn't know.

Well what can I say, I hit a par on the first four holes so we went four up after four holes.

Then we halved the fifth.

We then lost the next five holes, so after ten holes we were one down.

It was my best ever start on my home course, four pars, what a start.

So how can I get four pars and then for the next 14 holes do nothing?

I hit a par on a short par 3 to win that hole but we did nothing and lost the match 2 and 1

I now know my home course very well and I know that I can par every hole on there, so why can I not get the consistency that I need?

Answers on a postcard to......    lol

Unfortunately, Russ, golf is just not fair.  Just when you think you have it taped it smacks you in the backside.

Off your handicap you only need 4 pars and then you can afford to bogey the rest.

Matchplay is also a very diffeent game as you are playing the man and not the course so club selection can be so different to your normal game. It is not easy to blank the opponents out and play the course as you are seeing what they are doing all the time and you are responding to their shots.

Russ, I think we have all had that feeling after a great start...when will it all start to fall apart. In matchplay, as JP states, you are playing the man so every hole is a fresh beginning, there's no time to rest on your laurels or feel depressed over the missed three footer. However when you're in pairs your game plan is that bit more complicated, hampered by the fact that the actual shots each intend to play often don't come off. You've both got to know your strenghs and weaknesse and play accordingly ie if one of you is good around the green the other should go for the pin, if one has particularly good second shots then lay up and get your shot in first etc.
