Why do people not shout Four
We were playing Forest pines last week when after just playing a 157yd par 3 we got on the tee next to it to start our next hole. Just as one of my party were setting up to play the next hole a ball lands right beside us on the tee.
There wasn't a shout and it wasn't like we were so far away the player or any of those with him couldn't have shouted a warning.
Do we need hard hats on the golf course, i'm considering it.

I don't get it either! I'd rather shout a warning and be wrong than not shout one and see somebody get hit with a golf ball!
Did the group behind give you any indication of why they didn't shout?
Is it embarrasing to shout? To me it would be more embarrasing to me to actually hit somebody with a ball.
I've often shouted four and then seen the ball land 40 yards short, but I'd rather that than the other option.
I wonder how you would get on in a civil court if you sued for damages? I'm certain that you would get a bigger payout due to the fact no warning was given.

I agree Russ. Its a disgrace really.
If you hit someone, Im sure you could kill them!
A shout would not take too much.
TBH - I feel its to do with the modern game. How many times do you see the pros tee off straight into the crowd and there has been no warning whatsoever?

We didn't actually speak to the group behind, but we got the old wave to imply sorry!
sometimes though I've heard four shouted, but often wondered whether I should take cover as I couldn't figure out where it came from.
By the way whats the ruling if someone shouts four as your taking a shot and this causes you to miss hit your shot?

I'd say if somebody shouts fore as you are taking your shot then you are unlucky and cannot retake the shot, harsh I know!
When I shout fore I also put in a direction, like "Fore left" and I also point to the group that the ball is heading for. This way if somebody is looking back they will hear the shout and know that it's them I'm shouting at.
The Pro's, yes it's naughty not to shout, but I suppose they have a good insurance plan! But it's not showing people the correct way to do things.

Exactly the same happened to me and Tony only yesterday..
1st hole is a 100 yard par 3 and after ski-ing down the faiway we were on the next tee.
I watched as 2 guys tee'd off on the 1st tee and the ball shot through the green and past our legs..
Not a hint of a shout of fore..!!!!
Just waving hands and arms all apologetic like...
Turned out the guys were deaf and dumb...
At least they still made the effort to attract our attention (ams and hands waving) unlike some......

In these days of litigation and whether insured or not or maybe some people are not really sure as to what their cover is (my course /all courses /only uk ?)
All golfers MUST shout 'FORE' as loud as possible whenever a possible 'hit' is on
not only that and perhaps moreso any blind approaches where the ringing of a bell is requested must be adhered to - ignoring that one is just as bad as not shouting 'FORE'

The regular three ball I play in shout fore for each others shots. It is much more useful for a non-striker to shout as they can usually shout earlier and give an indication of the direction of the ball.

I've just been told by one of my friends it happened to him once where someone neglected to shout.
Apparently they had difficulty finding there ball when they arrived to look where it went with blank faces all round when asked where it went.
He told one of his party accidently trod on the ball completely burrying it in the ground.
I don't condone this action but I understand why he did it

Once saw a guy hospitalised for weeks after another guy did shout FORE!
He turned straight into the ball, knocked him out.
The shouts of "FORE LEFTRIGHT" is not helpfull because who'e left
ight is it.
I only shout is someone is in danger, never hit anyone in nearly 40yrs.
