Cleaning Gear

Posted by: user199058 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Fri 6th Feb 2009 18:29 | Last Reply

Hi all,

I was just wondering how often people clean their clubs?

I do it quite religiously after 'most' rounds but at least once per week (as long as I have played).

A friend of mine however never cleans his clubs - says its a waste of time.

What do you do?

I wipe my club after each shot.

Often when stood on the tee I will clean the grooves with my tee.

If I pass any water I will give my club a dip, then wipe it.

Before my big comps I will give the set a complete clean, heads, shafts and grips.

I play on average three rounds of golf a week so I will give my clubs a complete clean roughly once a month.

For grips I use washing up liquid.

Yes, Pat but then I use a scrubbing brush, before rinsing off and drying. Once dried they always feel nice and tacky.

I use warm water with washing-up liquid in it.

Simply wipe the grips with a damp cloth.

Then I use a dry tea towel and dry the grips before leaving them out of my bag to dry.

Have not needed to clean the grips as such.

I have read a few times in various places (icl. literature that came with clubs) that the grooves should be lubricated with oil after cleaning. Does anyone do this? - If so what do you use?

Cleaning clubs....I knew there was something I was supposed to do after playing last Sunday.  Thanks for the reminder Dennis ; )

Actually it is quite nice having a tidy up of the clubs and the bag every so often!

^Sounds a bit rude that. oh well!

Youre welcome Matt

I'm glad to see that most on here do clean their gear as often as I do and it is not my autistic behaviour showing

I've never heard of oiling the grooves though Chris?

the advice comes on the care tag with anything new from mizuno - it's also on their website somewhere. Personally I just clean the clubs under cold running water using a nylon brush (and drying thoroughly afterwards).

I think most probably do that Chris and does the clubs no harm by not 'oiling' them...

John P just took me back 35 years, as the washing up liquid and scrubbing brush was the tip a pro I caddied for as a teenager gave me, to save getting new grips when they started to get smooth and shiny so I'll need to check for tackiness.

I like to keep the grooves in my irons clear and carry a little notice board pin in my bag to do the job after every shot (not while I'm playing that particular hole if we've got company behind though...don't want to start up that etiquette thread again).
