Ideal Course

Posted by: user20126 [FORUM MODERATOR] | Mon 1st Dec 2008 18:33 | Last Reply

If I could build the perfect golf course then I would have four par 3 holes, 10 par 4 holes and 4 par five holes.

There would be 2 holes that were a dog leg to the left and two that were a dog leg to the right.

OOB's on the left would be the same number of times as OOB's on the right, and the same with bunkers.

The reason I say this is that my golf course has the majority of dog leg going left.

Now as a natural fader/slicer of a golf ball any hole that goes left does me no good what so ever!

Does your course suit your golf game?

I too slice the ball but on the two right angled left dog legs on my course it is an advantage to me.  I don't hit the ball far enough to reach the elbow of the dog leg so by fading right I don't get tucked behind the trees and do have some sort of second shot that will get round the corner.

On my course I have two left handed dog legs.

The problem is that I can drive the corner on the two main holes but it's OOB's if I don't quite make it!

Myself, I am a traditionalist and therefore favour the older style of courses, the links and the Heath and Heather ones.

Water hazards, IMO, do nothing to add to the attraction of a golf hole, especially when they are placed to suit a certain level of player. Golf is for everyone, or it should be.

I agree with John P about water features but I would allow a small stream to meander down the side of a couple of holes and have a pond at the back of a green for wildlife and aesthetic value.

I would limit the number of long holes to one par 5 over 510yds, one par 4 over 400yds and one par three over 170 yds.

I would have no internal OOB.

Finally I would only have trees whose leaves can be dispersed or break down easily.

My course isnt the longest but its nicely balanced,

4 par 3's 150 - 170 yds

only 2 par 5's over 500 yds though

rest are par 4's, 2 dog leg left, 3 right, and vary from 310 - 420 yds + 1 is 250 with an island green.

Its close house btw

Maybe too far for David to travel, Wayne.

Sounds a great idea, Wayne, how do you think them up.
