Inter society cup
Are there any essex based societies who would like to organise a team based comp in the new year. i am thinking similar to the celebrity greensomes that was on recently say perhaps 3 pairs from each society to include handicaps.

What a great idea !
Let me know how you get on with this. I suppose you only need 1 user registered on the GST site, they can then arrange their team.
Maybe I should look at organising a GST members team event next year ? at the last society day there was talk about looking at what it would take to organise a simple Ryder Cup style event and maybe play North v South.
Regards,
Darren.

There definiately be a GST organised North Vs South or some variation maybe Ryder Cup style next year.

good to see that my idea has finally sparked some interest if not quite literally exactly the same format. Im sure i could find a couple of volunteers for the event.
Can i just take this opportunity to thank the Northerners for making up the numbers even thought they know they have no chance of winning. You have to admire there spirit. (in ya face Eadsford)

Only joking Richard. Its all about the banter. How about you offer to captain the North and I pick up the South. If thats OK with Darren.

Looks like we need to find a venue and date then ?
Any suggestions ??
I'll happily organise with the course etc Any excuse to play golf really.
I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that Rich's picture of him collecting the Staverton Park GST comp winners trophy. Is not because he won but he's collecting on behalf of Andy ;-)

So as a southerner living in the Midlands I would play for....?
Reply : Thu 30th Nov 2006 13:20
Richard looks like i have landed us both in it, however in order that this idea does not fall at the 1st hurdle i will stick by my offer until this event has happened or a more suitable candidate runs for "Captain of the South". Actually that sounds great do i get a theme tune and a cape.
I Suggest that Darren decides the format and identifies a suitable venue and date.
Cheers Colin, p.s still hoping that someone else will now volunteer for the post, although im keeping the cape and theme tune.

Can't decide whether you too are really keen or power crazed loonies. I'll be in any team that will have me
Reply : Thu 30th Nov 2006 21:54
Suggestions for date/location ?
I've also created a public society called 'NorthVsSouth2007' anyone interested in playing in a FUN, yes FUN, golf battle between North and South then join the society to register an interest.
What's the definition of North and the definition of South?
Anyone with a O level or GCSE in Geography wish to advise of the dividing line ?
What is Nottingham ? other than the Midlands ?

Think youll find i am a keen power crazed loony so i think thta ticks all the boxes. Glad to see darren has emphasised on the FUN was starting to worry that things were getting abit serious.
How about Barnham Broom, played there before and thought it was a great venue.

Not quite sure why my posts have been displayed twice in a fred elliot stylee.
Barnham broom is north to me but your point is valid midlands would be wise however home and away fixtures are also a great idea.
How about a neutral venue for the 1st then the winners get to play on their own patch in the south next time. (theres that banter again)

Northerners in't flat caps and braces and southerners in burberry caps and shell suits? Probably rules the Belfry out with a dress code like that...
Reply : Fri 1st Dec 2006 11:25
Im certainly getting a hiding on the forum at the moment.
Just you wait and see an army of proud southerners are poised to offer some witty retorts. Any minute now. Wait for it.

I'm up for a north v south. I'll play for the winning team of course......The South!!
Reply : Sun 3rd Dec 2006 22:07
Darren, looks like we have our teams how do you want to decide the format, date, venue etc? Can you email me and copy Richard. Looking forward to it.
Reply : Mon 4th Dec 2006 11:59
January is a bit soon would suggest FEB or MAR. Probably best to decide format and venue 1st then at least we will know how many players can participate and waht date is available.
Midweek or Weekend ?
Reply : Mon 4th Dec 2006 14:42
Surely the coldest day of the year would be best. The North can play bare chested to show the Southern softies.
Reply : Mon 4th Dec 2006 19:23
I am very impressed with response from the northern contingent. To be honest i didnt think that the Internet had got that far up yet. Whatever next, Indoor toilets?
Feb / Mar it is then.
Wayne I want to see all those cards from the algarve so I can adjust your handicap accordingly.
Reply : Sat 9th Dec 2006 23:13
If it's not too late - I would be very interested too. As a Scot living in Lincs I would request qualification for the North team as it is all south to me!!!
Reply : Sun 10th Dec 2006 13:20
I suppose I will bring the cooton wool and bandages for all the southern softies the get a nose bleed when they travel north (past the watford gap).
Just got back from a little break so missed out on the early banter, so here's my two penneth worth. I'm interested so count me in.

Info from golf wiki :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golf
A foursome (defined in Rule 29) is played between two teams of two players each, in which each team has only one ball and players alternate playing it. For example, if players A and B form a team, A tees off on the first hole, B will play the second shot, A the third, and so on until the hole is finished. On the second hole, B will tee off (regardless who played the last putt on the first hole), then A plays the second shot, and so on. Foursomes can be played as match play or stroke play.
A four-ball (Rules 30 and 31) is also played between two teams of two players each, but every player plays his own ball and for each team, the lower score on each hole is counted. Four-balls can be played as match play or stroke play.
There are also popular unofficial variations on team play. In a scramble, or ambrose, each player in a team tees off on each hole, and the players decide which shot was best, Every player then plays his second shot from where the best ball has come to rest, and the procedure is repeated until the hole is finished. In best ball, each player plays the hole as normal, but the lowest score of all the players on the team counts as the team's score.
In a greensome, also called modified alternate shot, both players tee off, and then pick the best shot as in a scramble. The player who did not shoot the best first shot plays the second shot. The play then alternates as in a foursome.
There is also a form of starting called "shotgun," which is mainly used for tournament play. A "shotgun" start consists of groups starting at different tees, allowing for all players to start and end their round at the same time.

I propose Fourball matchplay competition. To allow for ties and should the North win any matches on 12th and ensure we all have value for money
then we will have either a stableford or stroke competition.
Will advise of date and venue very soon.
To recap
A four-ball (Rules 30 and 31) is also played between two teams of two players each, but every player plays his own ball and for each team, the lower score on each hole is counted. Four-balls can be played as match play or stroke play.

looks like most of my southern breathren are planning to do their talking on the course. They will not be drawn into mere idee banter. That at least justisfies the deathly silence for me anyway.
Reply : Tue 12th Dec 2006 18:08
I can see us southerners now, necking our pints of guiness on a famous balcony of a club house somewhere.
Reply : Wed 13th Dec 2006 19:03
No, there is no such course.
Reply : Thu 14th Dec 2006 13:22
Danny, you havnt signed up for the competition. Make sure you do in the join public societies section on your control panel.
Colin
And i think your right, surely there is no such course on which the south would be beaten.
Reply : Thu 14th Dec 2006 16:29
Danny
Pints of Guiness. Half a shandy more like.
Reply : Thu 14th Dec 2006 18:30
Signed up. Will try and get a few more southern softies to boost the numbers.

I have a friend that can play, and he'll wear a dress if you want.
Reply : Tue 9th Jan 2007 19:53
Lets hope that all you men manage to get your ball past the red tee when you tee off!! or there may be some penalties to pay!!! lol
Reply : Tue 9th Jan 2007 19:57
South places now all gone, just 4 left for the North.
Reply : Tue 9th Jan 2007 22:20
Lorna. If the weathers cold, you might not have the joy of seeing any enforced penalties of that nature.
Reply : Sun 14th Jan 2007 13:09
Danny - if the weathers cold, you men may not be able to find anything to pay the penalty with anyway!!!!
