driver or 3 wood

Posted by: user104363 | Sun 21st Sep 2008 01:03 | Last Reply

i just cant make my mind up weather i should just stick with my new driver a bit longer or just go back to using my 3 wood for teeing off

my 3 woods goes straight most of the time

wheres my new driver all over the place

i know its me thats at fault  but for the sake of a extra 20 yards or so is it worth it?

No, it is not worth it, golf is a game of how many and not how, so stick with the club that does the job.

I am just as guilty as you when it comes to the driver, I can assure you.

I think the hardest thing in golf, even more than getting the sweet spot to hit the ball, is weighing up the percentages.  I am convinced that my better scores often come from making better club and shot decisions than hitting the ball more cleanly.

Therefore it has got to be the 3 wood in any round where the result or the score is everything.  However keep the driver in your bag and use it on a few tees where you are faced with wide open fairways on rounds where the score is less important and keep working with it on the range.

Kevin, it's comming up to winter and when the ground gets softer (like it's not already) the ball does'nt roll very far so the 3 wood could be just as long, so give the driver a rest and in the time till the weather gets better learn to drive better, probably a few lessons would'nt hurt.I gave up the driver for a 3 wood until I got better, now, with the help of some lessons, I hit around 80 percent of fairways......

Yes and the other 20% are on the green...

For me its the 5 wood as an alternative to the driver right now. Works well bearing in mind I give myself 3 shots to the green so don't have to hit it silly yardages...

I stick with my 3 wood,i would rather sacrifice 15 to 20 yards than to waste a shot pitching back on the fairway because of a wayward drive, i feel golf is all about being comfortable and feeling confident so my advice is stick with the 3 wood.

I also think it's how ambitious you are, I tend to find most of the really good players I see are long hitters with the driver, obviously to get to the top of this game you will probably have to learn to hit the driver well to maximise your yardages, get to hit greens with lofted clubs instead of 6 irons....

personally i think anybody with a handicap of 18 or over would be better off without a driver.hardest club in the bag to use.a 3 or 5 wood straight is a lot better than a couple of decent drivers a round.play the percentages and watch your handicap drop
