handicap calculation

hi all,
can someone enlighten me on how a handicap calculated? the reason i ask is as follows: on monday i shot +15, then on wednesday i shot +17,final yesterday i shot +19, so the average would be about 17ish between the three rounds, only my handicap after 3 rounds is 20.7
for future referance i need a better understanding on how a handicap is calcuated.
