Do I buy a new set of irons?

Posted by: user105953 | Fri 11th Jul 2008 15:15 | Last Reply

Hi folks,

I'm looking for some advice about irons, but before I ask, here's some background info to consider.

I've picked up the sport again after a layoff of about 4 years (im 29), and I'm giving up another sport to focus on my golf.  I went for my first lesson this week and the Pro said he certainly thought I'd be capable of a single figure handicap, so without blowing my own trumpet too much, I feel like i have a decent swing.

I was never fantastic when i was younger (just playing in the summer), a good round would have been in the 90s.  The 3 rounds I've played recently at my benchmark course have been 104, 92 and 90 (obviously I didnt know the course at all on the first round).  My best outward 9 has been 42 (+6) and best inward 9 is 41 (+6), and my eclectic score from 3 rounds and 2 half rounds is 75 (+4), so i feel i have the potential to get better pretty fast.

Ok, so I'm currently hitting Mizuno MP60 irons with Mizuno Exsar R shafts which are pured, I purchased them from eBay, so not specifically fitted for me although im average height.

My question is this; assuming I am going to start striking the ball better do I stick with the MP60s, or are they too good for me at the moment?

Alternative irons I've looked at are TM R7 Draw irons which are £269, and would be fitted by American Golf.  (I do have a natural fade to my long irons and drives by the way.)  Do you think that game improver irons would be a good bet for me, and then possibly go back to the MP60s at a later stage?

Also, if you would recommend game improver irons all the way into single figures (I'm not sure if thats recommended or not) would you recommend trying a more expensive set of GI irons.  I'm particularly attracted to the Ping Rapture irons, and if i was to be hitting them for a couple of years, I might stretch to that money.  However if i got to a standard that i should move back to more of a semi-blade then I doubt that spending that much is warranted.

So, im summary, beacuse i went on a bit there .. should i stick or twist?  And if i twist, which way should I go?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I would say stick with what you have, they are from a well known manufacturer and quite honestly it will not be the clubs that will get you into single figures. Wish you all the best in achieving this, though.

Club fitting is only as good as the skill of the person doing the fitting, whether or not he is more interested in a sale or genuinely wishes to provide the right equipment for your stature, swing speed, etc. etc. I recently had a custom fit and quite honestly it was a waste of time, but then I was rather expecting that would be my conclusion.

When I started playing, every club was a blade and custom fitting was never heard of, you just bought off the rack what appealed to you and then learnt how to use them.

If you are going to achieve single figures then you will do it rapidly or not at all.

When I was a good player I could have played with anything.

Regarding replacing your PW head perhaps it would be worth a call to Mizuno themselves or failing any help from them ,perhaps you could source a good one from ebay.
