the longest par five youve played
664 of the yellow tee a monster of a hole hit two cracking shots and still a 5wood ish shot from the green
any longer holes out there
this was like playing a 6 hole
just short of 700 of the whites

Absolutely ridiculous length for a hole, even the pros must struggle.

Played a par 6 at Crondon Park. Cant remeber how long it was but the green was reachable in 3, well at least the lake next to it was

They tell me that hole, the 18th is now about 609 yards, but it was never that when I played at Crondon Park and it was always a three shotter then.
I used to like that course, some very nice holes.

SI 2 14th at Panther Lake at Orange County National in Florida. Only 539 yds of the visitors but a whopping 622 yds off the championship tees. I actually overshot the green with my second after cutting the corner (unintentionally) and taking around 100 yards off the length. Duffed my first chip just short and two putted to card a bogey, nett birdie. Managed to birdie, nett albatross the SI 1 7th with a massive 40ft putt (ask the missus, she was there and saw me do it!)

I started my golf at the public course in Chingford, Essex and the 10th hole was 580 yds. Unusual for a hole to be that long in the fifties.

Every par 5 is long to me!

I know the feeling, Darren, very rare do I get on them in three shots.

Anything over 600yds is a career not a golf hole

Can't match Styrup Park but Aldenham near Watford has a 616 yard par 5 of the yellows (636 off the whites) and a 537 yard a few holes earlier. Kilnwick Percy nr York has a 600 yard fourth hole. My scorecard seems to indicate I took 9.

This seems to be the norm these days with all these new courses being built. To get to 7000 yds they put in 2200 yds in four par fives and the rest of the course is a joke with lakes in front of them to make them tougher than the yardage.
Have not seen a good design yet from a new course.

I agree John, I find the shorter par 5's with interesting twists, turns and hazards far more interesting than the long bland ones. On the course where I am now a member the 570 yard par 5 is the least interesting and even for me as a short hitter the easiest one for me to hit in three. On the other three shorter fives each shot requires thinking about and accuracy as well as length and if you play one poor shot your chance of reaching the green in regulation evaporates.
As a course designer I would have thought the long par 4s are the best place to test the length a player can hit. However I suppose that a 460 yard par 4 doesn't have the same marketing appeal as a 680 yard hole.

Par 4's Jon were always anything up to 474 yds and I used to be able to hit those for two quite easily. Now of course I can't.
My biggest gripe with the design of these modern course which were all initially built for the corporate sector, and then when the bottom fell out of that in a big way they, have all been swallowed up by some group or other. They are all fighting to get their membership levels up, but forget they are dealing with amateurs who all cannot hit the ball as far as is necessary to play these courses hitting greens in regulation figures. My own club is a classic example of this, as there are nine holes on our longer course (The Wellington) where I have not got a hope in hells chance of reaching the green in regulation figures, purely because of the length.

Fair point John. A course I play quite regularly has a 471 par 5 (SI 9) that seem's to have been built to foil big hitters, OOB all along the the left and a dog leg at 220. Big tee shot will end in a bunker or the wood to the right. A big second from the fairway will hit the sand traps in front of the green. It's just well thought out and just proves it isn't just distance

There are designers, Tim, and then there are those who just do not have a clue. All these new courses will be played by amateurs in the main, and not very good ones at that.
A hole should be designed that gives different options of play depending on ones power and if a long hole is the desired, then at least there should be an option of running the ball onto the green, after all that was a part of the original game of golf, using the contours. Now it is just target golf, which suits the power man.

Interesting, Chris, reminds me of my time at Clevedon Golf Club in Somerset. Every year we held the long hole championship, which I won a few times.
It was played from the eighteenth tee to the sixth green, a distance of 1478 yards and one would always need an 8 to win.

Sounds great, Chris, wish I could join you, my kind of fun.

Craig, my home course Oakmere is similar. 453 yard par 5 to finish but earlier in the round 475 yd par 4 with a stream running across the front of the green. No hope of making it in two for me. On the rare occaisions I hit two shots 475 yards the second shot will be runiing on the ground for the last 30-50yards and will therefore be gathered by the stream. Still there's always the outside chance of on in three and a 1 putt.

Branston golf & country club, has a 610 yard par 5 off whites. It’s the 8th and not only is it long it’s also tight. And when you get to 100 yard its got a great oak blocking your way, get passed that and you've got water all the way across the front. And if those pair doesn’t get you, you've got 4 bunkers to get bi. It's a card destroyer in medal, but with wind against it destroys you anyway. Mind you this morning at about 7.45 it was great weather, I was playing bogey golf till I got to this baby, and it kicked my ass. Walked away with a 9. Great.
