Driving should i be concerned

Posted by: user16742 | Mon 25th Feb 2008 08:54 | Last Reply

Just  been looking at my par saver and thinknig about where i land my driver, and it goes on average 220 ish yards, Should i be worried about my lack of distance?? its a 13* nike sasquatch one.

Yesterday was the first time i kept my advance stats, and i noticed i only made GIR 3 times and 1 of them was on a par 3. All times except one i was short. though on the par 5 i overshot it.  Could this be poor club selection or the fact that my driving is short

Your driving isn't short, Matt.  If you can more or less guarantee 220yds and get accuracy then on most par 4's you'll have a 160/180yd shot to the green.  With your handicap it means that even if you hit the green in three you're on for a net par or even net birdie.

Don't get hung up on distance or being outdriven, there are very, very good low handicap players on these boards who hit similar distances and don't find it a problem.

220 on average Matt is a healthy blow and if its a dead cert straight you are in good position.

Regarding coming up short, I found it helped to take a extra club than what I thought I needed.

Matt,

Club selection is ofcourse important but what is very important is knowing what your distance your irons will do and how external forces (wind, Weather conditions, lie of the ball) affect your range/control of the ball. I am currently having much fun with a new set of irons and they have added about 10yrds on each of my irons, so ive been over shooting greens or leaving shots short as i try to get the ranges down. Unfortunalty there is no easy fix (if you can come up with one you would be a millionare) and its just a case of getting used to you clubs as well as the conditions.

As mentioned above, distance off the tee really shouldnt come into it (as long as your breaking the 200 yrd mark, as i play with a guy who is currently off of 8 and i can out drive him by over 25 yards on average but its his mid to low irons that he is awesome with and byfar the strength of his game.

Cheers

Danny

Im no expert but i think you will gain a little more distance, probably lose a lil height - but the less loft on the club the more chance you got to slice etc, so u need to take that into account

correct me if im wrong peeps

matt,

I doubt that you would get much further than you already do! What you need to be looking at is your swing/ball postioning/stance etc. Buying a lower lofted club only keeps the ball down and unless you are hitting your driver like a wedge i wouldnt change your club.

And as Alps Says, there is a good chance that you will start to slice/hook the ball more with a lower degree club.

Danny

Beware the temptations of the driving iron !

Been there, done it, and then realised that a 3 wood gave me more distance and better accuracy.

Back on topic though, 220 yards is a good distance for an amateur.  Don't compare yourself to the professionals, you will only be disappointed.

220 yards, followed by a 200 yard fairway wood/long iron will have you on a par 4 green or within a short wedge distance giving you 1 or 2 par putts.

At 27 handicap (IMHO) you should not be worried about GIR.  Set yourself a target such as giving yourself at least one par putt on every hole, this is difficult enough but takes away the stress of trying to hit the ball miles.

Rememeber the old adage:  DRIVE FOR SHOW, PUTT FOR DOUGH.

If you can get your short game in order you will see your handicap tumble, the driving distance will come with time and practice.

Matt, playing bogey golf is what you should be thinking of doing and this will produce an 18 handicap.

I played rubbish today, too cold for me, yet I still managed an 88 without hitting one green in regulation figures, of course I was close quite a few times, but 34 putts did not help.

Colin, I do not call putting from off the green as a putt as it was not on the green, so sometimes I get near enough to hole a single putt.

Very rare that I do use a putter from off the green though.

34 putts was bad today when you consider that I did not hit one green in regulation.

I feel that I am coming to the end of my golfing career, so much like hard work these days.

ok i see what you mean. you are landing just short on your approach implying that you should be near enough on you first putt to hole more than a few in one. Didnt you even one par three in reg, i thought iron play was your forte?

You are right,. Colin, iron play is supposed to be my forte, but today it disappeared out of the window apart from a few exceptions. Our first par 3 I can barely reach with a well struck three iron, our second one I always seem to find the water, our third I pulled left, our fourth I cannot reach and our last one, although very short is not one of my favourites, possibly because I do not get a shot there, although I managed to get up and down for a three today.

My iron play depends on how my back is, if I cannot get a follow through then it suffers. My driving is probably the worst in the world.

Wait till you see mine, You may have seen the swing but wait till you see where the ball goes

I am quite sure that you will drive the ball straighter and far longer than me. David is about fifty yds past me and both Paul and Danny are 100 yds in front of me.

You're right, Colin, I don't do diplomacy. Everything to me is black and white, no grey areas. WYSIWYG with me.
