Change of Golf Balls

Posted by: user30119 | Sat 5th Jan 2008 22:39 | Last Reply

Bought a new set of clubs today as explained inthe post below. Everything went well the pro said I had a smooth powerful swing but really need to look into changing the golf ball I use as my Nike Distance doesnt offer me anything around the greens.

He recommended I look at the Nike Karma but the compression is 50!!!!! Nike say this ball is aimed at the slower swing speeds.

So my qustion is what effect would this ball have on my driving and long iron play as my swing speed is around the 90-95 mark

Couple of questions as balls (both talkng about them and talking it) are a particular favourite of mine.

1) Why would your pro recommend Nike Karma?  It's a new ball and not particularly comprehensively reviewed.  Most of the write ups are still the manufacturers/golf industry guff.

2)  Why are you worried about what compression it is?  Are you worried about the fact the distance has 90 more dimples?  Wouldn't have thought so.  The compression figure is almost completely arbitrary anyway and varies between manufacturers and, as I proved not so long ago, doesnt necessarily affect how the thing plays.

I'm no expert, but with a single figure handicap I would expect you could go to  premium ball, like a Pro V, Srixon Z UR-C or Nike Platinum.

Tim I tend to keep away from the premium balls you mentioned for cost reasons really, I set my budget to £20 so her in doors doesnt kill me.

Regarding the Karma i'm not sure why he thought it would be better, I do have problems with feel around the greens and the ball I currently use I find hard to pull up 120yrds in so maybe he thought the extra soft ball would do the trick.

What alarmed me was the staement nike made that the ball was aimed at slow swing speeds and no mention was made towards the higher ones. Also like you pointed out that no reviews other than press releases from nike are available

David

that was going to be my next suggestion, it's what I now use.  I did, however, pick up a dozen Srixon Z-URS from a Nevada Bob's in Essex for under £20.

Can you  get some bite into greens with the Srixon then guys, I have heard that the feel  when putting is like a dull thump rather than the click you hear from hard balls is this right

The Nike ignite is quite good. Tried the platinum ones. Very nice, just  to pricey for me.

I have recently converted to srixon 333's, I get them used from ebay for half the new price, even a hacker like me noticed the softness around the greens and they don't spin too much off the driver either, don't know about backspin though.....

its a mine field Tony pulling my hair out here, surfing the net for more info but you just seem to find more questions than answers.

On a postive front I have got down to a possible short list of:

Srixon AD333....Titleist NXT Tour.....Nike Juice......try the nike karma as recommended or simply stop with the one i've used for the past 2 years

I think thats going to be the best idea.

David can i ask what you think off the spin into the greens using the AD333 as if i'm not wrong you said you used them?

If anyone is interested 've had an offer come through for a golf ball online shop giving 10% off to golfshake.com members.

They have the AD333 at £13.95 with the 10% off drops to about £12.50

I'll try and set up a page for these sort of offers, obviously I can' personally approve every company but there may be some good offers out there for golfshake.com members.

If anyone is in the same boat as me not sure which ball is best to use, Today Golfer this month as done a excellent review of 48 leading balls which stats taken from the Belfry using FlightScope.

Good read

I looked at the magazine today when I was in Sainsburys, but my ball was not listed, must be because it is a cheapo.

Right, Danny, brought up with balatas and have never changed.

Having said that, the old Pro at Frinton, where I was a member, used to use the Top Flite XL distance ball and when I asked him why, he said that 1, he needs the length and 2. it does not take long to adjust the short game to a ball that does not like to back up. Being a links course I suppose the bump and run shot suited the harder ball.

Interesting that a pro would choose a hard distance ball
