Bad news for me though. Just been over the range and they were all snicking sweetly off the mat, straight as a die. I also woke up with a good feeling about the competition. So that's me out of contention and heading for a 120 round then.

We are delighted to announce that putting coach Phillip H Gazeley will be giving a demonstration of his innovative 2 thumb putter grips at Donnington on the monday morning.

Interesting, putting is very much on my mind at the moment, I'll be announcing details of the project 231 putter shortly.
Anyone know what the course topography is like? Just wondering whether to bother with the cart or not.
Reply : Fri 29th Feb 2008 15:44
Front nine are undulating and the second nine are typical parkland. There are very long walks between the first and second and the ninth and tenth. I will need a buggy.
The weather forecast is awful with very strong winds up to 49 mph, so a testing day is ahead of us all.

Cheers for the weather info John. Someone told me it was sunny on Monday
Reply : Fri 29th Feb 2008 16:14
I would just like to say that I no longer pick the days, just in case I have some 6th sense in picking the bad weather days.
Reply : Fri 29th Feb 2008 16:16
Still, look on the bright side, there's a low UV value forecast so won't have to pack the sun cream.

I saw that, David, but the BBC are not noted for getting anything correct.
Reply : Sat 1st Mar 2008 11:08
I agree with John, BBC weather forecast is always pants. I find metcheck.com to be better.
Reply : Sun 2nd Mar 2008 20:00
Let's ignore the BBC weathers sleet showers and focus on the Metchecks focus between 9am and 3pm over Sunny with cliud

So how did it finish guys?
Reply : Tue 4th Mar 2008 12:01
Don't get depressed, David, it's only a game.
What you have to remember is that we do not hit the ball so far these days and when you look at that course, it has been designed for the young blood who hit the ball miles. I worked it out that the par for me was 85 as the par fours were too long, apart from two, for me to reach in regulation figures. The same applies to the par fives, which were monstrous and required four shots to reach the green, assuming they were all well struck.
Just take the first hole, you hit a good drive and a great second wood and still did not reach the green.
Pars are based on being able to reach a green in regulation figures and have two putts. That was never going to be on for us old farts, against that wind on Monday. Forget about it, as it was just one of those days.
Even, Kevin, who struck the ball beautifully, had trouble, so why are you crucifying yourself.
That round is now history, forget about it.

Hello, Stuart, nice to have played with you on Sunday, keep working on what we discussed and I am sure you will improve rapidly.
Reply : Tue 4th Mar 2008 13:10
Morning old people! Stop beating yourself up David, we've all gone through blips. I'd not presume to to question your depth of experience but you appear to be doing the same as I did last year - handicap dropping nicely and then I changed clubs and my handicap has steadily risen. I know I can play better than I do (doesn't everyone!) but my head was getting the better of me. It's been a depressing year but I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and you know you will too.
Still, it was a good weekend, good course and good company. Couple of good rounds and good to meet John, Stuart, Andy and Dave as well as the old hands Kev and David.
Thanks to Darren, Phil and Luke for the organisation too, flawless (almost) as usual!

Who won?
Dave another year and youll be good enough to play me. I shot 115 on Sunday & no i wasnt playing darts. 26 strokes more than my previous round 42 putts didnt help.

Forgot about my round on the Sunday Tim.
Really disappointed I didn't do myself justice on the Sunday competition. Had a bad feeling in the nets before I tee'd off as I was S@~%$)(g my wedges.
However, that aside a really enjoyable experience for my first Golfshake.com event and the chance to put names to faces.
Looking forward now to the N v S 2008 and giving those southerners a spanking !!!!!!!!

David, I have no doubt you were playing well last year and if you were to anlayse you play this last week-end, you will have to admit that in the main you drove the ball fairly consistent. I would have like to have been playing my seconds shots from where you were mnost of the time.
You also hit a couple of great second wood shots with that burner 5 wood, which tells me that there was not a lot wrong with your swing. You pitched the ball well and the only flaw in that was that you did not throw the ball far enough forward to the pin and as the ball was stopping instantly you were coming up short. This then puts pressure on your putting which looked to be pretty sound, but a few misjudgements in pace cost you a few three putts and very nearly a four putt.
I feel you biggest problem is in your head, as you seem to quickly lose the desire to fight after you have suffered a bad hole.
As you were mostly down the right of the hole and me down the left I did not see all of your iron shots, but the results showed that you were leaving them mostly to the right of the green and chipping and single putting was not prevalent in our fourball. That's how it goes sometimes.
Summer is coming up and we will get some games in and get you swinging properly, just like you used to.

I am pleased that you have at last seen sense, David. Have clubs will travel is my motto, but arranging a match does depend on those who have to go to work and whether they can sneek off or not.
I don't mind coming down nearer to you, perhaps we should arrange a game at South Winchester or I can contact you when we are going down next and invite you along.

David, just do what im going to do and put it down to the windy conditions!! It was tough going, especially on the monday, but im sure all of you who played will agree that the course was in really good condition. Hope you all had a good time, it was especially good to meet those of you who stayed on the sunday and had the pleasure of an impromtu swing lesson in the bar(after a few drinks), that came very close to taking out the light fixings!

Bit tricky getting any courses South of you David!
Reply : Tue 4th Mar 2008 16:47

Without Faldo, no one would have heard of Leadbetter.
I like the new tempo, Stuart, still bringing it round your ankles on the way up, although not so much as before, but still very much shut faced at the top, which as I said to you, I don't like to see. That of course does not mean that it is wrong, just the way I see it.
Your follow through is excellent in every way, balance being maintained, which tells me that the impact was correct. You will get there.
