This is the feature we recently ran and it's worth spending some time reading the comments:

Those comments are a very interesting read but one type of comment really puts my teeth on edge.

Saying clubs owned and run by it's members should open up more weekend teetimes to non-members.

Why???

So long as your club is being run efficiently and you are not losing money then why would you penalise the people that support the club (paying high fees each year) by reducing the times they can play at the weekend when they aren't working?

The whole point of paying a bit extra is to know that you are going to get a tee time at the weekend and also so you can do a few holes after work without having to fork out for a full round.

Golf doesn't have to be expensive as many people pointed out in the comments. All you need to do is find somewhere that suits your budget, the time you want to devote to it and the type of experience you want.
