North Vs South 2008 (The Rematch!)

Due to costings, availability and venue choices I'm potentially looking at Devere Belton Woods in Lincolnshire near Grantham around April'ish.

The event will be around £30-£35 but there will be an all inclusive option to stay over play a round the day before with dinner bed and breakfast for about £99.

I hope to confirm details and post the event in the next 2 weeks.

It's a pretty good venue having 2 courses and to quote

Host of the PGA European Seniors Tour 1995-1998 and current holders of the Midland PGA Championships, Belton Woods is a golfer's paradise. It is also now recognised as one of the only PGA approved championship golfing venues in the East Midlands.

I am quite sure that there will be no limit on numbers per side. More the merrier as far as I am concerned. If one side has too many then they loan them to the other side.

Is there anywhere we can preregister our interest and preference of Cowboy or Indian?  Or have I just done it?

Id love to come along but being based in Leicester which team do i play in ??  (or shud i say which poor team wants to put up with me...)

Perhaps it should be those who live south of the venue play for the South and likewise those who live north of the venue play for the North.

How about as well as definite North's and South's, we have a pool of "Not sure" players.  Then when the total number of players is reached, Darren balances the North and South teams with the Not Sure's to get them even on numbers (and ability if possible). 

Thanks Wayne.  If you play for the South, we may end up playing against each other.  You won't need Tim to help you out then!!! 

I'm considering being nice to John Flood and asking him to be the crutch that drags me round the course as we're playing on Sunday.  His golfing ability and the number of shots I get per hole might make us quite a team. 

I'm sure I can get my handicap close enough to 28 by April to get me 21.  Now where's that poncho.......

Yeah, sorry Chris, this one will be personal.  Very gracious of Wayne to say he was responsible for our previous collapse but I had a chance to tie it and blew it.  I'm only worried that Danny and David will chicken out of the rematch.....

Don't worry about it Tim.  If you'd have heard his whinging at Breadsall - "How can you get 2 shots on this hole?!?!?!?!".  He could've been pleased about it this time if we'd have been partners.

Evening guys, there appears to be several forum threads now dedicated to the impending defeat of the Northern hoards and i must confess that i havnt read them all but i was just wondering who has put themselves forward as potential captains this year. Having fullfilled my duty last year (note to self: must do better this year) I am interested as to who is picking up the challenge for 2008 when the tables will surely be turned.

I have a suggestion (dont worry its not me, i only hope the new captain sees fit to allow me back ) or have these already been decided.

Certainly Northern clips those David. Plenty of battering but no tears from hardy warriors.

Now had you shown Southern clips - well we may still be handing out tissues....

Just to let anyone interested in playing aware I've temporarily stopped Northern entrants which is now at 22.  There are currently 11 southern entrants so although I've only just posted the event on the site I didn't want to end up with 30 in the North team and say 15 in the south. The current maximum is 60, 30 per team, but this could be extended anyway.  The event is over 3 months away and 99 days so it's only early days.

Finally, to be honest it's all just good fun, supposidley, and a lot of people could really have a team choice, where they were born or where they live. 

Probably due to the venue and its location. Im not moaning of course as the North team did win last year and this was the agreement but i would hazard a guess this is the reason why, I know at least one southerner form last years line up that isnt going for this reason.

Last time was kind of Midlands based and this time Col as you have said the North had the honours.

For next time I've had quite a good suggestion that the location should be altered Ryder Cup style, so regardless if the North win again the next event will be based in the South, whereever the South may be

Not submitted it yet John.  You're welcome to join us whenever as I know you struggle for a game in the colder months.  Not playing this week but I could be available for a game Sat morning next week if you fancy it.  Need to be an early start though as I need to be at The Hawthorns for a 3:00pm kick off. 

I was actually better than at Breadsall on Sunday (couldn't have got much worse!).  Consistency is the enemy at the moment.  Two or three good shots followed by two or three bad ones.  I blame the new grip and swing........

Think i'll be staying over Wayne, plus i'll try and get my bro involved although i think the north team will be looking for a new captain this time around

We appear to have -5 handicapper on our team going by the name of Eldrick Woods. 

Even Eldrick woods cannot give that amount of strokes on a course that will not have greens good enough for him to putt on, not forgetting that his record in matchplay is not that special.

Will the format be the same this year? I havnt read any details on the comp as yet!

I've already enquired both with golfbreaks and the hotel. The leisure facilities are free, but the spa treatments are extra and range from around �15 up to stupid money (separate to the hotel but located on site I think). The leisure facilities is things like the gym and pool.

They do spa packages ranging from �75 to �150 but you need to book them separately. I also asked if they do a spa offer similar to the "Sunday Driver" golf package but they don't.

1) Wayne - no chance with what i have lined up Pal, and with the way you talk you should be playing for the southern team.

2) Darren you are doing a sterling job getting this organised.

3)Colin and I will be playing again, we have down loaded a lot of cheats to our brains from golf-banditos.con so with any luck will not be going to get smashed 6&5 this year.

Hey, I've reached an agreement where I pay for her spa day and the non-golfer overnight stay and she pays for my overnight package in return as my Valentine pressie.  My view is that it saves me all the hassle of figuring what to get her (she doesn't like chocolate and is allergic to flowers).  And anyway, if I got it her as a surprise she wouldn't actually take the spa day on Valentines Day anyway so no problem.

Hi guys Ive just thrown my name in for the south (seeing as thats thats the only option left now lol) so (subject to me getting approved and accepted) im looking forward to my first ever competition..........ps, apologies to the poor people that i grouped with you all better get use to shouting fore !!!!

Hi, the south is at about 22 people, I have a couple of names to add.  Unfortunately due to other commitments a few southern competitors have dropped out.

Still almost 3 months to go, so I would hope that the remaining South spots get filled.  3 months! quite a bit of time for practice and banter then

Oh no, we can do no more than pray for mercy when the onslaught begins.Playing  with true northern grit bringing tears of pride to the eyes of our kindred folk who wait anxiously for our safe return..

There appears to be a bit of allegiance swopping going on over at the N v S competitors - some last years Northern players seem to have defected to the South!  No names mentioned Glen.

In which case we should consider closing the borders until after the event...

Perhaps they have no real roots & just want to play for the winning team regardless.

Maybe winning just isnt enough to compensate, perhaps they are willing to risk losing just to be southerers if only for the day

Can you shed any light for Alan?

As the northern braves will be kicking arse in just a couple of weeks now, this might be a good time to raise the question about illegal drivers and weather or not they are allowed at this event and if not, like I suspect, then there should be no excuse to be using one.

Interesting point, Alan, I owned two illegal drivers but lucky for me I only paid £30 each for them. I am quite sure that those who paid the full price will not just be throwing them in the bin and are still using them, yes, even in their own club competitions, as I know that at my club, no one has ever come to look at my driver at any time.

My own personal view is they should never have been banned for the average club member, only for those who play in Scratch Amateur tournaments and of course, the Pros.
