custom fit centres

Posted by: user553910 | Wed 5th Feb 2014 19:51 | Last Reply

I've decided to get soem clubs properly fitted and I'd be interested in views on custom fitting centres in or near London. I'm not interested in a fitting centre for a particular golfing brand, I want an independent specialist. I'm perfectly happy to pay for the fit whether or not I buy clubs.

Any good ones you've used?

Depends on whether you want custom fit or custom built, Steve. Custom built is just what it says, you choose heads and shafts and then they are built specifically for you. Custom fit is a set of standard clubs that are modified to (almost) suit you. As most custom fits are carried out by the big chains you don't necessarily get what you pay for (as a couple of people I know have found out) with compromises being made depending on what is in stock - which is why they often do it for free. My clubs were custom built by someone who used to work for a company called Designer Golf, although they are probably a bit far from you in Northants. This article by them is well worth a read before you commit.

Yes, sorry, I meant custom build, not custom fit. I have no idea what heads and shafts I want and would rather hit a bunch and trust the numbers than select on the basis of brand or reviews.

I would travel to Northants if it's the best place to go but I'd be surprised if there are no good ones nearer.

Please don't take this the wrong way Steve but at a handicap of 26.6 (I'm making a generalisation here) but i don't think you'd see that much benefit from them. Maybe spend the money on lessons first? As your handicap lowers and you progress, your angles of attack will no doubt change and the clubs you have custom built now, might not be the best fit for an improved swing. Again, i have no idea on your age or swing but i'd definitely see a decent pro before you take the plunge with having a custom built set of clubs. But everyone is different and if you feel you'd greatly benefit from custom built clubs then check out these chaps! They're based in Surrey www.precisiongolf.co.uk

Good Luck!

I haven't entered any scores on this site since October so the handicap displayed is a bit out of date. I'm having regular lessons, play every week, and am hitting the range at least twice between games. I broke 90 in December.

It was actually my coach who suggested that I would benefit from, at the very least, a custom shaft on my driver, because stock shafts tend to be too long. So I thought I'd get that done and see if makes a difference.

Thanks for the tip on precision golf.
