Think I've peaked early! Had a cracking round yesterday, dropped Hcap from 21.6 to 19.8. Driving was a shocker though

Course Report. I played Cherington yesterday and Avening today. Played both off the whites (our tees for the comp) in a cold biting wind (our probable weather at this rate!)
Cherington is in good nick and playing long. Greens are a little slower than usual but running well. The rough is down due to the cold start to the year meaning the course is quite forgiving. If the wind isn't blowing, there'll be some good scores
Avening played a beast today. I shot 29 points in a club comp (putting issues, but that's another story!) and when I left was sitting 7th in my division! Only one person had shot 36+. Again, the course is in good condition and playing long. As it's parkland the protection is still there as it doesn't rely on the rough. Only complaint was the greens had been hollowtined so they were bobbling around a bit, but they were still running really quick.
I think both courses would benefit from a little rain in the next week, especially to help the tining close on Avening, but other than that they will give us a good challenge. Actually hoping the wind blows a bit too to make it interesting

cant believe we still getting sodding snow in Kent, what the hell is going on with the weather this year??!! looks like the thermals may still not be ready to be packed away, missus under strick instructions to send out search party if not returned on monday, going come rain, sleet, snow or hale! need the practice as the swing well out judging by the practice shos today, need to get the eye back in.

should be good fun....but I'm in the same boat with needing to find the swing. Hopefully it'll arrive in time!!

Chris,
did you seriously post "I think both courses would benefit from a little rain in the next week, "?? Even when you know Darren is playing & this is a foregone conclusion!
If it rains now we can all blame you :@

I've been putting some practice in for this (and the Gtour) and scores have been shocking. Nut that could be due to my last couple of rounds being played in the snow. A new driver may be arriving at my doorstep a day or two before the event, and needless to say my first swing with will be on the first tee (I have tried it out, but swinging on a round isn't the same). So that first shot will not only set the tone for the day, but also commence my love/hate affair with the big stick

I'm in Hastings at the moment and have spent a few days at Seddlescombe Golf Club. Been to the range every day trying to get my rhythm back as I've not played for a month due to the shite weather we've been having.
Shot a massive 10 points through the front 9, then 22 I the back. A cracking turn around! Been to the range again tonight to work on my short game. The touch is returning.
I'm hoping to get out again twice more before Monday.
Very excited about my first golfshake event. Looking forward to a bit of banter and a couple of quality rounds.

with you on that one Mr Bolton, new driver, wood & hybrid for monday, could be a very interesting day !!
Reply : Wed 3rd Apr 2013 21:15
Chris B - We have a driving range (cost roughly 2:00 for about 30 balls) if you want to try out the new big stick before the first tee and decide whether you want to take out the old one or the new one. Tokens are available in the pro shop
Chris W - Glad you are finally able to attend an event, even more so that it's mine. Don't practice too hard or you'll get 'golfed out', feel really under pressure on the first tee (with the baying crowd overlooking it) and do something you didn't want to. And if we play on Avening first, the whole left side of your first hole is out of bounds
Reply : Wed 3rd Apr 2013 22:06
Baying crowd! Crickey. Maybe I'll go for a Bubba/Poulter moment and ask for more noise!
Reply : Wed 3rd Apr 2013 22:13
There's only two groups after you so it'll be fine. Probably.....
Reply : Wed 3rd Apr 2013 22:37
Chris P - The old big stick is not an option. I have never thought it was possible to loath an inanimate object, but I absolutely hate my current driver. Hence purchase of new one to overcome mental block!

Chris. Many thanks and I will take you up on that offer soon.

My preparations were going OK up until yesterday - played 17 rounds so far this year (with another coming up on Sunday), shot my lowest ever round (77) a couple of weeks ago and have been hitting fairways with monotonous regularity. Started hitting greens from around 130 to 150 at last. So what happened yesterday? Wrapped my 7 iron around a tree and have wrecked the shaft which I can't get fixed until next Tuesday - bugger. Have made a decent fist of straightening it out but it just doesn't feel quite the same now.
Reply : Fri 5th Apr 2013 08:47
Tim, I will be well pleased with 17 rounds the entire year rather than the first 3 months ! Shame about your 7 iron, mind you I am pretty sure nobody else could have straightened it in the same way. See you on Monday.
Reply : Fri 5th Apr 2013 13:25
To be honest Tim I was quite surprised that I'd clocked up so many, although 6 in a week in sunny Portugal helped! Will just have to avoid leaving anything 155 yards out to avoid the 7 iron.
See you bright and early on Monday!
Reply : Fri 5th Apr 2013 14:01
Tim would you like to borrow a 7 iron for the day?
Reply : Fri 5th Apr 2013 15:02
Only if it's a Miura...

Right, last bit of info for you
- When you pull into the driveway, you pass between the 2nd green and 3rd tee of the course we play in the afternoon. Please wait to be waved through by golfers on the 3rd tee
- When you pull into the car park, the driving range is on your left and the clubhouse in front of you
- Short game practice area (chipping green and bunkers) is behind the clubhouse (go between clubhouse and driving range)
- Putting green is in front of the clubhouse
- First door in the clubhouse is the pro shop. Get range tokens, strokesavers, drinks, balls, trollies, buggies and (in my case at least) abuse here
- Second door in the clubhouse is bar entrance (bar is upstairs). Breakfast and lunch is served up here. I will meet you up there and give you your cards
- No golf shoes, trainers, jeans or wet waterproofs in the bar. Shoes must be worn
- Breakfast will be served from 8:45 to 9:30, lunch as you finish your first round
- Third door in clubhouse is entrance for changing rooms. Golf shoes are allowed in this area
- Lockers are available in the changing room. They take a 1 coin that is returned
- There are showers available and towels are provided free of charge
For those who really want to plan, we play Cherington in the morning and Avening in the afternoon. In the morning we will have nearest the pin on the 7th and nearest the pin in 2 on the 14th. In the afternoon we will have nearest the pin on the 6th and longest drive on the 16th

Cool. Hopefully I won't get lost! How far is the course from Stroud premier inn?
Reply : Fri 5th Apr 2013 23:20
10-15 mins
- Turn right out the Premier Inn car park
- At small roundabout at top of hill, turn right (second exit)
- At next roundabout turn right (third exit)
- You come next to a double mini roundabout just after passing under a railway bridge. Approach in right lane
- Second exit at first mini roundabout (straight ahead) and get into right lane
- Second exit at second mini roundabout (straight ahead)
- Follow road until traffic lights (about 0.75 miles) with large B & Q opposite on right
- Turn left at traffic lights
- Refer to directions from the North/South West/Wales I sent out via PM and follow them from B & Q

Tim choice of miura 1006 , 5003 blade, baby blade or Maruman CX 31 blade (miura forged) take your pick
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 00:19
Oo, oo. 1957 Baby blades? I won't use it, I'll just fondle it in the buggy. (Nearly bought a set of Conductors on e-bay the other day - went for 42.02 - dammit)

No probs Tim, Chris I remember some munter wearing golf shoes in the club house last year .Can you remember who?
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 09:49
Dunno, wasn't me. One at the members once moaned at me for going up in my socks to get a take out tea on the way to the first tee. I pointed out just cos his trainers were black it didn't stop them being trainers and perhaps he should go downstairs with me. He went very quiet.....
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 17:31
as not to get too golf'd out today, went to the driving range for a couple of hundred balls !!, think the new hybrid may have to stay at home, more wilder that a teenager with an alco pop ! think the stance was all wrong, new driver & wood went well and after that practices on the short game left a little to be desired, think I will leave it to the day in reckoning before swinging any more before i golf out totally and use up what little luck i have left lol
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 18:21
Well not wanting to get my excuses in early but....
Played 12 holes yesterday and could hardly walk at the end. My sciatica had kicked in overnight and I was hoping it would walk off. It didn't. Resting up but thinking playing the Abbey tomorrow might not be sensible
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 19:01
How wet is it down there? Er sounded wrong
Thinking of breaking out the white trousers on Monday for the first round.
Playing tomorrow at 9:45, then I'll be ready for Monday.
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 19:18
Played 18 today, not my best round.
Tried a few different shots I definitely wont be trying again on Monday
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 19:47
Chris W
If I'm honest, I'd like them to water the course a bit. Playing like early summer. Greens on Cherington are playing like they do in the summer (links style, no bad thing). As regards the white trousers, make sure you don't spill your soup
Reply : Sat 6th Apr 2013 19:50
The white trousers are making their season debue on Monday
Bring on the summer!

Clubs and shoes are cleaned. Bad news, is that my white trousers don't fit
Obviously still carrying some Christmas weight
Alarm is set for 5:45am, ready for the drive down. Should take 2hrs 10mins, but that's without the phone call when I get lost.

Slung a cheeky little 35 pointer in today, if my putting had have been better I could have got 3 or 4 more. Only problem I had was my yardages were miles out so have just loaded up the bag with Z-Stars instead of Trispeeds - this after clearing the green on a 165 yard par 3 with an 8 iron! Almost guaranteed to play like a donkey tomorrow then....

Winner Morning Round - Chris Perry 44 pts (sorry!) Winner Afternoon Round - Alan Gunnigle - 39 pts

You certainly wouldn't be off 10 if your previous rounds were submitted for handicap Alan. Based on the first 3 cards you had round there you would be playing off 1
