Paul, I've also heard something on those lines, I think technically amateur's are unable to be awarded prize money. Not sure if this is only related to golf or other sports.  Also I'm sure I've seen an amateur event where the prize pot was actually vouchers.

I'll have a look around and let you know.

Also, I doubt it's against the law and you could do what you like but would guess the restrictions are around the rules of golf and restrictions from the R&A or EGU and affiliations with clubs. Where private society events fit in would seem an interesting quesiton.

Prizes in amateur events are limited to a value of £500.

I would think that's only to comps that want R&A or EGU recognition.

Calm down dear, your handicap is heading in the wrong direction for you to pick up any.

Reference the rules on prize money/prizes for Amateur competitions, the R&A have a comprehensive booklet on this:

http://www.randa.org/index.cfm?action=rules.amateur.home&cfid=7974665&cftoken=17588906

John Pettitt was correct with the £500 value rule, however if you took more in prize money such as a car for a hole in one, you would lose amateur status.  You could apply to be re-instated but there is normally a 2 year period after applying.

I'm sure that when I played in a charity competition the prize for a hole in one was free entry into a raffle to win a car.  As the raffle only consisted of one ticket (nominal 1p value) it meant you would keep the car and retain amatuer status.  Not that it worried me, I got closer to the car than the hole....

Don't you just love creative marketing or is that creative accounting or creative rule bending

The weekend is a big plus for me - cant get time off in the week at all.
