Naffed off
Received notice today that our golf club is becoming a pay to play course from April with no memberships. Now on the lookout for a new club.Should be an interesting 3 month as The Pro has received loads of complaints within a hour of the news breaking. He doesn't agree with the decision. Thoughts?

all depends if the club is making money and if not it had had to go down that road, what i have done is paid 50 to join my club plus a handicap fee so i can play in comps and so on i pay a reduced green fee which as i dont play alot helps me but you will find lots of clubs in 2012 have lost money as they have been closed or the weather is bad and no money over the bar

It's been coming over the years. With the tougher drink\drive laws, people stopped travelling for a couple of pints. Golf Clubs with the cheaper prices used to do a good trade on an evening. Pubs have been closing for years now, so it will follow that Golf Clubs will follow. A sorry sight.

I think that members will have to embrace the pay and play. It costs a lot of money to run a golf club and as Lyth points out the catering side of things is in permanent decline too. Clubs have to make money.

Yep,it is a sign of the times, however at the last count there were 360 members, the bar and catering is outsourced, whilst the club has a healthy number of societies in the summer and has paying visitors as well.To me 360 members subscriptions is a lot of guaranteed money to give up.

All golf clubs are struggling on the bar front. One of the agendas at our AGM next week is to charge the members another 10% for their membership for the lounge and bar. This fee will go onto our cards for use in the bar, but it means a definite income for the club. Those who use the bar, will get there money back (so to speak).
I think its a good idea to be honest. Another solid income for the club. I can see some people complaining that they come to play golf, not socialise in the bar.
Will be an interesting debate, me thinks.
