Thinking about joining my first propper club

Posted by: user43763 | Wed 12th Dec 2012 13:17 | Last Reply

Ive been offered membership for a real good price and have played there a few times and really like it, my problem is... I live 30 minutes away from there I would be joining on my own and dont know anyone there alot of the time the pro tells me that the bottom 9 is not used so the 18 is front nine twice as most of the players there are a little over their prime the sunday tournament is a roll up, which could get awkward as i dont know anyone on the plus side its a bargain price and is very affordable and im itching to start playing some competitive golf.

Just wondering what people think i should do

Alun, seeing as you like the course and the price is right for you, then it is a no brainer - Join.

Roll-ups are just the thing to get to meet different club members as you will play with different players almost every week.

You will then get an official CONGU handicap which will be recognised at every other club.

Get stuck in Alun. You will not regret it. You will be surprised at how quickly you will meet and socialise with fellow members. Your golf game will see the benefit also. John is spot on with his recommendation!

I would say go for it Alun. I joined a club earlier this year after a lot of thought as to wether I would play enough to justify it. I work constant nights but my time of is mainly through the week. I did not know a soul when I joined but the pro and secretary made me feel very welcome, and the members are friendly as well. About a month ago I was practising on the putting green when a man approached me and called me by my first name. It turned out to be a lad I went to school with and played in the same football team when we were about 15 years old, I am 45 now. I had not seen him since we were 17 years old. We now have a least a round a week together ( weather permitting) and he has introduced me to another fellow player. As Mr Pettitt has pointed out, you will meet different players, enlarge your social circle and also improve your game. I have found my game to improve slightly by playing with players of a higher standard than me. Go on, go for it you won't regret it.

Roll-ups are just that, you roll-up at a certain time and usually a draw is made and you then set off to play, simples.

As John P states. An arranged time of say 8am is the meet time and 1st tee may be 8.30 you will usually have a group of at least 12 that are defs or maybes so you are not just turning up on the off chance. The difference to normal comps is that you do not have to commit yourself. Dave CAC handed Geordie.
