36 Hole Season Starter 2013 - Final details
It's back!!! 1 golf club, 2 courses, 36 holes, 1 day
After the 36 Hole Season Starter earlier this year was so well received, I have already booked us in for 2013. The event will take place at Minchinhampton Golf Club again and will take place on Monday 8th April 2013. This is a couple of weeks later than this year but there are two key reasons for this: -
- It's after the clocks have gone forwards so we have more daylight towards the end
- The above means we can have a longer lunch break between the two rounds
- It's during the school holidays
The general scope will be the same as this year. Bacon rolls and tea/coffee on arrival, 18 holes on one of the courses, lunch (likely to be chips and sandwiches), 18 holes on the other course, prizes. Cost will be about 40 (final price is TBC).
There is a restriction on the number of players with a 30 player maximum so get your name down quick if you want to play. The comp is on the link below: -

I'm in.
Never been to a GolfShake event and its a 2hr 30 minute drive, but bugger it. There's an event I can actually attend - I'm in.
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 13:26
Request confirmed Chris. You're officially in. There's usually someone from up your way attending so you should be able to sort out a car share. There's always the option of stopping over for the night too. There's a Premier Inn in Stroud which is only a 10-15 minute drive away
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 14:05
Nice one mate. I don't mind the drive matey. Just give me a mid morning tee off and I'll be fine.
As long as I can stretch my legs and hit a few balls I'll be fine!
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 14:19
Sorry Chris 36 to much for me nowadays, took me a couple of days to recover last year (nearly a senior now lol) . I strongly recommend it if your seriously thinking about it 2 great tracks and excellent value.
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 15:26
Chris - First tee off is 9:36, last is 10:30. I can give you a later tee time if you want
Dave - You'll be missed. You could always split a buggy with JP if he plays. I'll make sure I put the pensioners together if you want....
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 15:48
chris can i have a late one too please, bout a 3-3.5 hr drive from my gaff
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 16:55
Put me down after 10 matey. Gives me plenty of time then.

Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 19:28
Think i'll need a buggy for 36 holes
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 20:14
I'm in, and could do with a later tee time due to the long haul drive!
Reply : Sun 18th Nov 2012 21:36
30 players max, 13 places taken in 24 hours. This comp seems to be quite popular
Reply : Mon 19th Nov 2012 16:51
Wabey I'll be going, think Steve may join too, sure we can work something out in regards to travelling.
Reply : Mon 19th Nov 2012 21:37
Less than 48 hours since making this game available and 16 out of 30 places are already gone, plus one person down as interested and an e-mail from two more players intending to put their names down. Looks like we'll be full pretty quick
Reply : Tue 20th Nov 2012 14:31
I think I would like to attend this, Tim I live near Dartford if that is on your way to share car/costs?
Reply : Tue 20th Nov 2012 20:09
What's the format? Never even thought to ask
Reply : Tue 20th Nov 2012 20:43
Format is 2x 18 holes of individual stableford, full handicaps, white tees in 3 ball groups. Prizes for 36 holes, each 18 holes and spot prizes. You will have 60 to 75 minutes for lunch between rounds
Reply : Wed 21st Nov 2012 00:16
chris, more than happy to share fella, Dartford just up the road from me, drop me a PM to [email protected] with ya number etc and we'll sort out having a meet up etc before hand.

Reply : Wed 21st Nov 2012 23:37
oh so looking forward to this again,
Reply : Wed 21st Nov 2012 23:52

Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 14:06
I have permission for a day off work - I'm in as well.
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 16:37
Really enjoyed this comp last year. Both the courses were in fantastic condition and present lots of challenges. Made a change playing a well looked after course and looking forward to April.
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 19:41
Now down to just 5 places......
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 19:54
Make that 4!
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 20:11
I think we're gonna need a bigger comp.....
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 22:14
I always think comps like this can get too big. You have to either wait for your tee time or wait for everyone to finish. I do prefer the latter. However I think 30 is a good number especially 10 groups of 3 balls
Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 22:15
Oh and would rather have soup and sandwiches than chips. The soup we had this year was very nice indeed !!! Bet some of you thought you'd never hear me say that !!!!!

Reply : Thu 22nd Nov 2012 23:03
Haven't finalised the finer details yet Martin, but I agree that 30 players in 10 3 balls worked well
Oh, and now 3 spots left
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 00:38
changed my mind , I'm so weak to resist ...t'was the soup that done it !
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 08:51
Well done, Dave, does this mean I have a buggy sharer?
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 10:24
2 places left and 4 people I know are interested
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 13:38
And we're full. Wow. Less than a week from posting the comp and many returning after this year's event
If you want to play but haven't been quick enough please still put your name down and I will add you to the waiting list. There's always people who drop out and those on the waiting list will be offered the empty slot on a first come, first served basis
Thank you to everyone for the outstanding support for this comp
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 17:32
Yes John ,I'll go shotgun mate
Reply : Fri 23rd Nov 2012 19:53

Reply : Mon 26th Nov 2012 14:30
lets not be to hasty JP !!
Reply : Mon 26th Nov 2012 14:31
sounds great to me really JF
Reply : Mon 26th Nov 2012 17:14
Three bombers together should generate a bit of a power struggle off the tee, ruining the actual golf scores of you all, enabling us lesser lights to advance up the leader board. Wishful thinking of course.
Reply : Fri 30th Nov 2012 22:01
The comp has been extremely popular and was full in just over a week and had a waiting list in just 10 days.
Due to the popularity, I have spoken to the club and managed to secure two additional tee times, taking us to 36 players maximum. The four players on the waiting list have automatically been given one of these spots, so that leaves us with just two more which will go on a first come, first served basis
I can also now confirm the price for the comp will be 44 each and will include: -
- Bacon roll and tea/coffee on arrival
- 18 holes on either Avening or Cherington course
- Lunch of soup and sandwiches (rolling basis as rounds finish)
- 18 holes on either Avening or Cherington course (whichever wasn't played in the morning)
- Prizes for overall result, result of each 18 and spot prizes (nearest the pin, longest drive, etc)
To confirm, the comp is stableford format off full handicaps and will be played from the white tees in 3 ball groups. First tee time is confirmed as 09:36 and the afternoon tee times will be confirmed a little closer to the time, but the first one will be at about 14:30. This should give everyone at least an hour for lunch
I will keep you updated with any changes and will be in touch early in the New Year with details of how to pay. I will also ask if there are any special requests, such as early/late tee times, buggies, preferred playing partners, etc. Obviously, if you have any questions feel free to get in touch
Reply : Sun 16th Dec 2012 13:38
Damn! Nearly missed this....
Anyone know any decent B&B's locally - I don't fancy a 5hr drive and then straight on the first tee.
Reply : Sun 16th Dec 2012 15:28
JP - no more bombs, upgraded to missiles care of Mr westwoods driver.
Reply : Sun 16th Dec 2012 15:54
Brian,
There's a Premier Inn in Stroud that is about 10 minutes drive from the course. reasonably priced and has a bar and restaurant attached. It's also about a 10 minute walk from the town centre if you wanted a larger array of pubs and eating places

I'll be sending out details this weekend by PM Tim, along with some "upgrade options" like full English instead of bacon roll, ham and eggs instead of soup and sandwiches, etc
Reply : Wed 16th Jan 2013 22:11
Hmmmm, full english.
Reply : Wed 16th Jan 2013 22:48
I also believe there are currently 9 players within the area or traveling down on Sunday and playing at the Abbey near Redditch on Sunday 7th April.
Any takers for this just let me know.
Reply : Sun 20th Jan 2013 21:29
As promised, here are some further details
Firstly, I can confirm that the competition is fully subscribed with two people currently on the waiting list, with many returning after last year. This is a great endorsement for the competition and I hope it will go as well as last year (including the weather!). The price for the competition is confirmed as 44 which includes: -
Tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival 36 holes of golf (18 holes on each course) Lunch of soup and sandwiches between rounds Prizes (if I can convince Darren to donate some again!)
There are some optional upgrades available as well. These include: -
Full English, orange juice, toast & marmalade on arrival 3:50 extra Lunch upgrade including sausage & mash, fish & chips or ham, eggs & chips (other options available, please contact me) 2:50 extra
If you want to upgrade this will have to be confirmed in advance so please let me know if you are interested. If there are any specific dietary requirements (Neville I have you down for vegetarian) then please let me know. I have received requests for a buggy from John Pettitt and Gary Edge and if you guys are happy to share the buggy (and hence halve your cost) I will make sure you play together. If there are any more requests for a buggy or an electric trolley please let me know so I can book them in advance. These will need to be paid for on the day in the pro shop
Payments can now be taken and payment is to be received in full by no later than Sunday 10th March 2013. Failure to pay by the stated date will result in your place being offered to the first player on the waiting list and/or removal from the competition. Details of how to pay will be sent by PM when the formatting is fixed! Please put in the reference your name and 36H SS, for example C Perry 36H SS so I know who has paid and why. If you want to upgrade please let me know and include this cost in the payment
I hope youre looking forward to this as much as me and that the weather is nothing like it is now. If you have any questions please get in touch by posting below, by PM or on twitter at @C_S_Perry

Chris,
Don't know if it's possible but would there be any chance of renting a motocaddy battery for the second 18 ? My battery won't get round 36 holes with my tour bag.
Martin
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 12:38
The electric trolleys that are hired out are Motocaddies Martin so I know they will have charged up batteries available as long as the trolleys haven't all been hired out. I will ask the question for you next time I'm up there
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 13:14
Martin, I made the decision last year to buy another Motocaddy battery as I was playing more & more 36 holes of golf in a day. There pretty cheap to pick up on the Bay & in the long run might save you money? Or get Tim to carry it for you on the afternoon, I know he likes to carry bags!!
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 14:34
Do they not make AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries that fit? Vastly higher power output for a similar size traditional lead acid and won't spill and can be stored in any orientation. OK, they're about twice the price, but the one I've got on my bike weighs half the standard LA and has nearly twice the Ah rating. It's also been on there for 4 years and still cranks the bike over easily despite not being used that often.
Either that or just carry you wimp.
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 14:40
Tim, You could opt for a lithium which could do the trick but as you say they are twice the price of a normal battery. I could carry but I'd rather save my energy for other activities
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 21:50
Chris
Happy to share a buggy, thanks
Gary
Reply : Mon 21st Jan 2013 22:20

Reply : Mon 28th Jan 2013 23:21
Jp, so you've kicked me out of the buggy then
Reply : Tue 29th Jan 2013 06:57
Dave, Something about all the zig zagging he had to do for you last year made him dizzy?
Reply : Tue 29th Jan 2013 22:21
Had a couple of people asking about the lunch upgrades, so here are the options
- Butchers Sausages On A Bed Of Mustard Mash With A Rich Onion Gravy
- Pan-Fried Steak Served In A Warm Baguette With A Side Order Of Fries
- Chicken Tika Masala With Basmati Rice, Popadum & Mango Chutney
- Traditional Fish & Chips With Mushy Peas
- Ham & Brie Ploughmans With Chutney, Crisp Salad, & Rustic Bread
- Ravioli Filled With Spinach & Ricotta With An Italian Tomato Sauce
- Home Cooked Ham With A Brace Of Eggs & Fries
If anyone wants to take one of these please let me know

Just a quick note to remind you that the deadline payment for the 36 Hole Season Starter is four weeks from today. So far I have received 7 out of 36 payments and those that have paid have received a confirmation from me. If you have paid and I haven't sent you a PM confirming payment please let me know. We have people on the waiting list (including last year's winner!) who would happily take your spot if you fail to pay on time so please make sure I receive your payment before 10th March
I'm now starting to take requests for the day, including starting to put groups together. If anyone has anything in particular please let me know. So far I have received the following requests: -
- Buggies - John Pettitt, Gary Edge, Dave Ley. Two buggies are booked and if anyone would like to share a buggy with one of these guys and split the cost let me know and I will pair you up
- Lunch & breakfast upgrades - I've had several of these. I will confirm them all with you a couple of weeks before
- Veggie request - Neville Smith. This is confirmed with the club
- Grouping request - Dave Homer, John Flood, Tim Greaves
- Plus a request to borrow a battery in the afternoon from Martin Millichip
Hopefully the weather will improve closer to the comp, but the course is bearing up quite well at the moment so fingers crossed for good weather

Good evening everyone
This note is a reminder that payment for the 36 Hole Season Starter taking place on Monday 8th April is due and needs to be paid by Sunday 10th March AT THE LATEST. That is less than two weeks away. If you havent had a PM from me confirming I have received payment then I havent had it. As a reminder, the cost is 44 and includes: -
Tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival 36 holes of golf (18 holes on each course) Lunch of soup and sandwiches between rounds
Please make your payment as soon as possible and put in the reference your name and 36H SS, for example C Perry 36H SS so I know who has paid and why. If you want to upgrade the breakfast or lunch please let me know your choice and include this cost in the payment (contact me if you want more details)
Failure to pay by the stated date will result in your place being offered to the first player on the waiting list and/or removal from the competition. There are 3 people on the waiting list at the moment and I know of at least one other player keen to join so make sure you pay on time or you could lose your place
If you have any questions please get in touch by PM or on twitter at @C_S_Perry
Reply : Thu 28th Feb 2013 18:42
Sorry for the slow payment. All done now, I think. Let me know if you've not received payment. Basically tell me if I've cocked it up somewhere along the way.
Any news on tee times yet?
Reply : Thu 28th Feb 2013 21:34
No cock up Chris, payment received. Will be doing the groups in the next couple of weeks. I have you for a later tee time, is that correct?
Reply : Fri 1st Mar 2013 06:46
Around 10:00 would be great mate.
Reply : Fri 1st Mar 2013 23:26
I'll sort something out for you. Think I have you going off about 10:15 in the provisional groupings
Reply : Fri 1st Mar 2013 23:29
We have had a drop out. Unfortunately Mark Williams can no longer make it. His place has been taken by first on the waiting list. That was Alan Gunnigle. - last year's winner
Still a chance for a couple on the waiting list to make it as anyone who does not pay on time will be put onto the waiting list and then it will be first come, first served
Reply : Sat 2nd Mar 2013 06:41
Nice one Mr Perry, that's sounds great. Leaves me plenty of time, really looking forward to a cracking day

Good Evening all,
This is a final reminder. Payment for the 36 Hole Season Starter is due by Sunday this week, 10th March
If you have not received a PM from me confirming receipt of your payment then you haven't paid.
If I have not received your payment by the end of this week the following will happen: -
- You will be placed on the waiting list
- Any available places will be offered to everyone on the waiting list on a first come, first served basis for ONE WEEK
- After one week, any spaces left will be offered out to anyone who wants them
Please make your payment as soon as possible. If you want to upgrade the breakfast or lunch please let me know your choice and include this cost in the payment (contact me if you want more details)
This is a great day on two great courses. Don't miss your chance to be part of it

Reply : Sat 9th Mar 2013 18:02
Chris B, glad to see you still coming, my email [email protected], drop me a line with your number on and we'll sort out collection times etc nearer the time, Tim
Chris P, if i decide to change my mind on a golf buggy do you know if we can hire them on the day ??
Reply : Sat 9th Mar 2013 19:14
Tim,
There is only a small pool of buggies but if one is available it won't be an issue
Reply : Sun 10th Mar 2013 20:41
At this point, there will be two places available to those on the waiting list tomorrow. This is because two people who were confirmed have not paid or contacted me about payment. The deadline is TODAY. These people will be put back onto the waiting list and the first people to pay will get the spots
I won't name names. You know who you are
Reply : Sun 10th Mar 2013 21:37
Chris how often do you do these types of comp? Only seen this now and would be interested in the future, any coming up near herts would be good.
Reply : Sun 10th Mar 2013 21:52
Hi Nick,
This is at my home course and I've organised it for the last couple of years. If you're looking for something this year then G Tour may have something to suit you. Colin who runs it is a Golfshake patron and they do eight to ten comps across the UK every year
Reply : Sun 10th Mar 2013 22:00
Cheers Chris will check it out.
Reply : Mon 11th Mar 2013 20:29
Failure to pay or respond to PM's has seen someone removed from the comp. PM sent to next on the waiting list to see if they want the spot.
Thank you to those of you who took the time to contact me and promised to pay today after a final warning; two of you still haven't. I will be watching my account for the payments. If they're not there tomorrow, your spot will be offered up to other players
Sorry if I'm being harsh, but I don't want people who genuinely want to play missing out
Reply : Sat 16th Mar 2013 09:40

Hi Chris I am just waiting for the stick from Floody about being behind 2 groups with you and Martin in them ! Lol
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 14:12
Well I went round one of the courses in 2h 40m yesterday so of there are any delays I think you'll be needing to look elsewhere
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 14:57
Chris, Difference is we'll be playing 18 holes on each round not 9!! #slug
Tim, bring your miners hat with you as you might need the light towards the end of the 2nd round!
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 15:14
Chris - I take it you only went for a brisk walk and didn't take your clubs then...
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 15:33
The clubs went with me and were used. I played a full 18 holes too . The rumor that the date was picked as its after the clocks go forward to make sure I could get round are completely unfounded and anyone who says otherwise will be heading from my lawyers
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 15:54
Can they spell then?
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 19:56
They don't have fat fingers and small keyboards like me Tim
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 20:49
thanks for the times Chris, will bring the rabbit torch & florescent Balls with me !! lol
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 21:49
Don't worry Tim, sunset is not until 7:55pm. That gives you 4.5 hours to get round. The club gives us a target of 3h 50m for medal comps (more that 4h 10m can be penalised) so 4 hours for a stableford 3 ball is more than enough

4 hours for a stableford 3 ball is more than enough
easy to say and type that but not so easy in reality all I'll say is new players to a new course off white tees plus I played last year and can remember how long it took then.
I suppose we all now know so have no excuse if we don't make your 4 hour time
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 22:16
Darren,
You beat me to it!
I seem to recall that 4 & half hours were the average rounds last year. I think players need to remember its a stableford comp & pick up when they can't score & not carry on so they can track their score later. I'm safe in the knowledge that my 2 playing partners on the day don't hang around & it should be a good day. I hope it's a sunny day like last year?

With John Pettitt going out in the first group to set the pace, you'd better bring your running shoes
Seriously though, everyone has five hours between tee times. Everyone should get 45 minutes minimum for their lunch and be aiming for an hour. It's up to you to ensure your pace of play is appropriate as if you're slow you will not only reduce your lunch break but that of everyone behind you (as Darren found out last year)
As for playing off the whites, the par is the same so you should take the same number of shots. It's just more club with the second shot....

Chris, which courses are we playing?
As regards timing, I hope it's less than 4 hours. I run a stableford competition at my club every year for U14's. We get children as young as 7 playing and they can usually beat 4 hours!
Reply : Mon 18th Mar 2013 23:04
Richard,
We're playing Avening and Cherington. These are the two newer courses and together on the same site (the Old Course is about 4 miles away). I'll be sending out directions in a few days

The main problem I see everytime with stableford comps is players who are playing a course for the 1st time wanting to hole out on every green so that they can track their score.
I can't think of anyone who would need to carry on scoring after their 7th shot (Par 4) or 8th shot (Par 5). If you do just put down a 10!!
Always apply the play when it's your turn & forget about whose honour it is on the tee.
So taking all the above into account as long as Chris lets us through on the 3rd hole we'll be ok

Just so my comment isn't out of context, last year did take over 4 hours for the first 18 but only by about 20 mins. Thankfully it wasn't a 5 hour round like some of the events I've organised !!
Chris, 5 hours between tee times seem perfect to ensure we get some lunch in between.

chris
dont know if you want to look into this but i used it in my last society event and was great.
www.golfgamebook.com
its a live scoring app just input the scores after each hole and it will update so everyone can see
you will however need to download the app on a phone. then make sure at least one person in each group has it installed and joined the game. it is self explanitary once its installed and in use

I like Darren's suggestion for live scoring. That would add an extra dimension.

Directions to the course have just been sent out by PM. My phone number is also on there for anyone who decides to use their Sat Nav and subsequently gets lost. If anyone needs specific directions to the course (such as from a hotel they are staying over in) just let me know

Managed to strain my upper back muscles on the range last Sunday, no golf until at least next week. Wouldn't have minded so much but my slice was incredible and I really frightened the 220 yard marker.....well 3 times anyway

putting us out first as well, no pressure there then
Reply : Sun 24th Mar 2013 19:01
Only pressure on the first tee Gary, once we're out of sight it'll be laughs all round.

Right, Tim, we have a good four ball, so will be a very enjoyable day without the delays the rest will suffer from. Looking forward to playing with you again and seeing your progress with my own eyes. Leyo is always good company.
