Grip Tape

I've decided to start changing my own grips and I was wondering whether you needed to use a particular type of grip tape. I've heard you just need double sided tape and white spirit to apply the grip. I bought some strong double sided, thin, clear plastic tape from B&Q will this be ok or does it have to be the double sided masking tape kind?
