Approach Wedge
Could someone tell me what an approach wedge is please.
Does it replace the pitching wedge or 9 iron or sit beteen the two..?
I carry 48* pitch 52* gap 56* sand and 60* lob as it is so not really needing more wedges but just curious.

Just seen this Robbie. An approach and gap wedge are one and the same. 'Approach' is the American term. I have an approach as part of my nike iron set (bought in the US) and it is 52*, same as your gap. Love it to bits and is my weapon of choice from within 80 yards.

I have seen these in some golf shops they are often marked with an "A" instead of the loft. Shop staff refer to them as an "attack" wedge probably another americanism.
Robbie i can go one better i have five wedges including the pitch, gap, sand, lob and 64 which never leaves the shed.
What name should a 64 have. Severe lob? Bootsale fodder?

Is that why your short game is so good then, carrying 5 wedges around.

Colin
I have 4 wedges, 48* (PW), 52* (AW), 56* (SW) and a 60* Lob in my bag. The one that gets the most use is the AW.
The correct name for a 64* wedge is "Eyebrow Remover"

The 56 is my most trusted club in the bag very rarely letting me down. i have a full set of discontinued ram "zebra oxide" wedges. The 64 has only had a couple of outings and only really for comedy value opting to go over rather than under 30 ft tall greenside folliage, to be fair it worked both times but contrary to Darrens remarks (always nice to get praise) my short game isnt that good to ignore the risk of taking on such shots.
How about "Lunar wedge"

Good choice the 58 will be much better for hitting toffee and other any other confectionary for that matter.
The 60 should only be used for cake or biscuit based products.

72* wedge, surely someones having me on. Perhaps its for when the ball is hard up agaisnt a hazard and you need to face away from the hole with the ball jumping over your shoulder on impact.
I think John Virgo used a similar technique.
They will try and sell us anything. Talking of which i am struggling to find consistency with any club in my bag other than my wedges, so i was thinking does anybody know where i can get a 10 degree wedge for par fives and long par fours. And perhaps a 19 degree wedge to replace my long irons
