Use of 56 wedge as Sand iron?

Posted by: user439628 | Sun 10th Jun 2012 21:19 | Last Reply

My new set of irons did not include a sand wedge

Not sure if this is a daft question...if I buy a 56/58 wedge (eg Titleist Vokey), is there anything (theoretically) stopping me using it as a sand iron?

I realise I need a club with a lot of loft and was hoping one club could cover two purposes

Many thanks

I use a 56* Vokey. It works well enough for me. Just make sure you choose one with plenty of bounce.

Sand wedges are around 55deg so a 56deg would be the best. I've a set of Mizuno MX200 to which I added a 55deg MX wedge to cover the lack of a sand wedge.

For most of my bunker shots I use my 60 lob wedge

Yeah same as Russell, I nearly always use my 60 LW Ping Tour-W in the sand round the greens. Has quite a lot of bounce and so is better designed for sand than say tight lies. The actual SW in my Ping G15 set I prefer for approach shots and chips when I need to get a bit of air into it but not as much as a flop shot that I might attempt with an LW.

So the answer to the question depends on the bounce I would say. Ask for advice in the shop you get it from.

I've got a sand wedge in my standard set and also have a 56 wedge, but I very rarely use either in bunkers. The last time I remember using the 56 was when I was in a bunker the size of a WW1 shell crater at Woodhall Spa. Unless the sand is really hard packed I'd rather use anything up to 7I and open the face, seems to work for me.

I have a sand wedge and Nike SV 56 & 60* wedges. I use my 60* for greenside bunkers (and open the face).

Like a few others above I have a SW as part of my Iron set and also carry a 56. Use SW from the fairway and 56 from the bunker. Just what I feel comfortable with.

Thanks again all. Happy to go ahead now and get 56/58/60 for both bunkers/up and downs Full story is that I bought RocketBallz irons set and shop owner I bought from sold me an Attack wedge (50 deg) saying it would be fine out of sand (which I now disagree with!), as they didn't do a SW I've since found out they do, but partly accept blame for not researching properly- however I am only a year into the game and took this guy for gospel! Cheers

for me the bounce angle and depth of sole make my sand wedge a better option out of the bunkers, and my 54* bounce 08 vokey better from the fairway (tight semi) I have tried the 54* and 60 * from bunkers, but find that they dig into the sand too much unless i open the face completely. i carry both a sand and 54* wedge as i use them for different shots. I know that i should be able to play all kinds of shot with each club, but i just dont get that much time to practise !
