Most important would be waterproofs and a drink if you are playing in the UK - but the most important which people tend to miss out?

Err rule book and a pencil sharpener?

Er, well it would be a bit pointless me taking a spare strap for my trolley as I don't use one. And laces? Hmm. It depends whether or not you look after your kit or not - I always have a spare set of shoes in the car and I tend to make sure that I do the ones I'm wearing up properly before I set out.

However, based on experience I think the most used things in my bag (apart from the obvious) is sunscreen and my leatherman multi tool. Not for my own personal use, but it's amazing how many people have availed themselves of one or the other.

Spare laces and spare straps for a trolley, you cannot be serious. in 75 years of living I have never had to buy new shoelaces and real golfers don't use a trolley.

uuummmm....I thought the answer was going to be something serious like suncream. Seriously folks, that big yellow thing is a killer and as golfers we spend far too long exposed to it. I lost a good friend through skin cancer at the age of 21.

Fact, Karl, you will see all good players carrying their bags, in fact I carried until I was 62. Both your listed items would never be used. If a lace broke, there would be sufficient left to make a firm tie. If a trolley strap broke I doubt it would come off the trolley.

its not often that i whole heartedly agree with John, but in this case i do. SPARE LACES !!!! are you serious Carry your bag to begin with and learn to tie 2 things together as my 3 year old son is doing.

In my many years of playing I can only think of a very few times I have needed to retie my shoe laces during a round. Sand getting into shoe was the usual reason. I have broken laces when first putting shoes on though, and as JohnP does I just make do.

If we are serious about what we "should" carry then the laces will do for both your scenarios and so less weight to carry.

I started reading this post because i though i'd get something useful out of it but seriously spare laces???! I cant think of one occasion in my life that i've ever though "oh if only i'd packed some spare laces". Thats not just whilst playing golf that's in every walk (excuse the pun) of life!!

I still reckon ibuprofen is a better shout because sometimes my shoulder really hurts half way round

As for the other stuff, as i carry my bag and don't like to carry much in the way of weight ( i.e i only usually take 4 or 5 balls for 1 round), you can forget it.

Karl, dont let past threads and disagreements influence your judgement. There are plenty of us that think spare laces are a waste of time, not just John. I took the thread as fun which is why i replied about talent, but laces and bag straps are neither a bit of fun or a serious response, just odd !!!

My tip would be a bottle of water and a Mars bar. Other chocolate based snacks are also avaliable. I sometimes forget and theres not always a halfway hut.

Dave, the amount of time needed to get round a course these days has made water an essential.

What I have realised is that the majority of private clubs in my era always had water fountains around the course thus obviating the need to take bottles of plastic with you. In fact my current club has one at the 10th tee near the halfway hut.

I seem to remember that as a young man I did not seem to need the water, but now it is essential for me and I usually make up some drink with electrolyte to enable me to get round without becoming lightheaded.

I would love a mars bar, but am trying to maintain my weight loss programme.

Big bottle of flavoured water and waterproof top. Apart from this week, still pretty wet in the north east - hosepipe bans are unheard of in this parts.....

With John on the carrying part - so much easier getting about the course in my opinion. .......although I have a 3 wheel trolley loaned from a friend for the 4 course classic next month.

Lee W. I assume by "Great players" you mean professionals which, as you know, is a different scenario to those of us who play for the pleasure.

Take notice of what John Manly has posted, sentiments which are very close to my heart, and probably the reason he has attained the low handicap he possesses.

John M,

How many wedges do you allow for real Golfers. One for each shot or All shots with one?

Interesting point, Lyth, regarding wedges.

Old school dictated learning how to use the PW and SW for the many differing shots that can be played with either of the clubs. Lob Wedges and Gap Wedges have been introduced to make some shots a little easier, but I feel that knowing how to play all kinds of shots from the standard setup is of more overall benefit to ones game.

We are allowed 14 clubs so the make up of this is personal.

Of course the amount of bounce dictates what shots can be played, myself I prefer low bounce wedges.

Yes JP, I turned up at a Pro-Am and overheard a Pro talking his expected round with his Caddie in order to work out which Irons he could leave out to accommodate his SIX wedges.

Lyth, I think six wedges is taking it a bit far, but with the prodigious distances they hit the ball most second shots for them are wedges. Most good players seem to be able to hit the PW about 150 yards so maybe six wedges is not out of the question.

at one of the courses im a member at, with it being a short course its not rare that wedges out number irons for the low handicappers.

I don't agree with JP's views on everything but I have to say I learnt to play the game with just a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. I would have to conceed that a 3rd wedge (in my case a 52* Vokey) is useful but I can't really think when I would want to carry more than three.

I can remember a few years ago a welshteam coach band the juniors from using specialist wedges, preferring them to learn the skills if the pw, sw. Must have been on to something!

Nothing worse than playing with people who carry and having to listen to their clubs going click click click all the way round especially when you are trying to play a shot and because they are carrying they usually think that they shouldn't have to stop while you play. Inconsiderate!

re: The 2 Things you should have in your bag

Jim - I think that people who don't stop/make noise when you are taking your shot would be inconsiderate buggers whether they were carrying or not! It takes a certain kind of person to be like that.

Wedges - I have had a very basic set of clubs as I have been learning to play and my sand wedge has a very forgiving wide base which makes it a lot easier to do the basic shots as it has lots of bounce.

In my latest lesson my coach gave me a 58 degree wedge to use with a much narrower base and I am amazed at the difference in control you get.

I have always been a bit sceptical about how getting new clubs can improve you as a player but I really do think when it comes to wedges it could be true.

My much better half is getting new wedges so yesterday I inherited his 58 and 52 Titleist vokeys and I spent about 3 hours practising with them. I found I could get much closer to the hole from a range of distances as you can get the ball to stop with a greater degree of accuracy. I also love the fact you can open up the club face and get it to stop 'like a butterfly with sunburnt feet', great when chipping over a bunker with the pin close the edge of the green.

I have them in my bag and was very much looking forward to using them in the medal today - sadly the course is closed because of torrential rain all night and it is still hammering it down.

Happy Jubilee!

Interesting how an innocuous post (as this one started), has managed to raise so many hackles. What you need to remember chaps is that this wonderful game has room for carriers/ pullers or whatevers. Also what we carry in our bags is personal choice. Hybrids are a great innovation and their wide use by pros speaks volumes. I think we need a metaphorical handshake all round.
