why shot shape?

why shot shape? why not hit the ball straight at the target? just wondering as i was considering learning how to but just can't find how it can improve my game.

Liam, the hardest shot in golf is the straight shot.

For you to achieve a straight shot every part of your swing must be perfect.

To give you a better chance of hitting the fairway you would shape your shot, either a fade or a draw.

The pros don't hit straight drives, they shape the shot.

Once you get down to your short irons/wedges, then you can hit a straight shot.

Liam,

Look at a 20yd wide fairway from an angle, and hey presto, it's wider. (simple Maths)

Also a 'draw' will run, while a 'fade' will check.

All in all it just helps you control the ball a little more.
