What the club says: Less than an hour from London you will find Surrey Downs Golf Club, set in the rolling Surrey Hills with spectacular views across The Downs. Peter Alliss was commissioned to design the course in keeping with the surroundings and he has produced a down land golf course which enhances the natural beauty of the hills.

The golf course is maintained to a very high standard with the greens being to USGA Specification. The downland setting normally provides a breeze which adds an alternative aspect to the challenging but very scenic rough with a particular feature being our large shared 9th and 18th green which is well protected by a large pond coming into play on both holes.

The course is challenging for golfers of all abilities with interestingly designed holes which require thought on course strategy over sheer length of hit and with this in mind it is a hugely enjoyable course which rewards good play.

Greens weren't in great condition, lots of ridges and bumps. Layout uninspiring. Short track but long rough kept you honest

Course in poor condition having just been hollow tined and apparently not watered. Putting was pure chance. Fairways OK but rough was poor condition as were some of the tee boxes. Bunkers were unplayable with virtually no sand and hard as a rock. Clubhouse OK but no towels for a shower after 6-pm!!
Would not visit again.

Surrey Downs

Played here with a Society last Thursday.
Course in poor to fair condition. Tee boxes badly scarred and uneven. Greens were shocking but had just been hollowtyned.
Bunkers were unplayable as rock hard and hadn’t seen a rake for ages.
Greens dry and hard and very undulating so precise shots impossible.
No towels provided as the facility was closed around 5/6pm.
Very disappointed. All the money spent on the clubhouse maybe?

Very poor

Played 4.30 friday 17th august 1st time ive played surrey downs so was looking forward as was told 1 of the best courses in surrey...was not told all greens being hollatised prior to booking. So waste of time putting on greens, the fairways had not been cut and was in bad condition .. no holes where marked so had to ask other golfers where next tee was. Aslo wedding reception being held and drunk idiots driving buggies around 17th and 18th faiways screaming shouting while golfers on course.
Very disappointed will not play there again.

Average course

Very nice location and upmarket arrival impression.
Best to play in good weather as it is not really a winter course and was very boggy in places. Instead of charging £22.50 this should be reduced to reflect the conditions as it creates bad feeling. If I ran the course I would be clearing puddles from the course, not just collecting money!
A few good holes but I feel the course could have a lot more character via foliage given its location.

Friendly club, interesting course

Following a very wet winter, much of the course has stood up well to the weather. No temporary greens or tees and firm conditions once you get past the first 4 holes. Interesting layout - good tee shots are rewarded with short irons to the green on many holes. Very undulating greens; being on the right part of the green is essential.

Hidden gem and greta value for money

Surrey Downs is one of the friendliest clubs going, welcoming as members and to pay and play guests. The course is downland, with thick rough but scoreable if you stay out of it.

Lovely downland undulating course

A very nice course with variety, definitely one to think your way round. No need for a driver on the early holes, and the gradients and hole layouts mean placement is often more important than length.

For a course that was closed at 7am due to flooding it was open again at 9am. Well done to the grounds staff for as always excellent work.

Great course

First time round here. Played late on a Sunday in the hope it was quiet and it was. Course has a few trees but mainly has the feel of an inland links in many places. First 4 are a loop close to the clubhouse but a short walk between 4 and 5 then takes you further away and the course really opens up. Several changes in elevation and slope as you go around meaning shaping the ball will greatly help you get round. Also a number of blind tee shots mean experience is also useful here as it's not always obvious where each hole goes. Bunkers are well placed both in the fairway and greenside. Greens seemed a little slow to me but were in good condition. Really enjoyed it and look forward to playing again.
