What the club says: Situated on the outskirts of Wigan, Porters Wood 9-hole golf course is set in natural, undulating parkland between the villages of Shevington and Orrell.
The course measures 1,424 yards and consists of 7 par 3’s and 2 par 4’s. Every one of the 9 holes offers a unique challenge, with danger lurking at every turn. Whether it be Ackhurst Brook which runs through the heart of the course, the ancient woodland of Porters Wood, the steep valleys, ponds, bunkers, banks of gorse, or a mixture of young and mature vegetation, golfers of every ability are sure to be tested.

One of the best par 3 courses in the NW
Essentially a par 3 course but the 1st and 9th holes are short par 4's. All the holes are intetesting and challenging. The greens are excellent. This os a great wsy to practice short holes for the more serious golfers and os also good for beginners. The par 3's are a good length so representative of par 3's on a full course.

Social distancing to the max
Not played in years about five and was pleased with course apart from the trees developing not much has changed. A quick 9 holes suitable for all(Round played: Aug 2020 - Score: 45 Handicap: )

Excellent nine holer

Superb course!
This course is always a pleasure to play, and they work hard to ensure it is always immaculate no matter the weather. Great test for the short irons.

Always enjoyable.
I know this course well but it is always a challenge (to me anyway!) It looks simple at first but if you are not accurate the ball can roll well away from the green for a very tricky return shot. The greens are always immaculate despite what some players have reported (usually in the middle of winter). A welcoming little course.(Round played: Jul 2018 - Score: 41 Handicap: )

Good but still on mats
The course was very boggy in majority of places (acceptable given the rain the day before) minus the greens, these were near perfect condition. My main concern was the fact the 7of the 9 holes are still using mats. I had played the full 18 holes at Haigh Hall.and Hart Common the week previous and no mars were in use. Slightly disappointed with this.

Great for practising your short game.
Porters Wood is a nine hole course, the first and ninth being par 4's, the rest par 3's. It looks easy when you first arrive but there are some tough holes. You have to be accurate as there are slopes and gullies which take your ball away from the hole if you hit a wayward shot. As a senior golfer I paid £6.50 for nine holes, great value for money. Visit their website for other prices.(Round played: Nov 2017 - Score: 44 Handicap: )

Excellent little course, well worth a visit
Excellent, well kept little 9 holer. Friendly welcome, clean and well kept Greens. Plays quite quickly, doesn't ever seem to be overly busy. Some excellent little holes along the way with enough to keep you interested, some tricky shots and areas to avoid if you want to get round well. Well worth the ?8.

Course in perfect condition - greens rolling superb! A great challenge in the wind

it is by far the best par 3 course in the North West I have come across - the tee beds, fairways, bunkers and greens are all extremely good indeed, and don't forget your pitch repairer as the greens deserve to be kept as greate as they are.
the 1st and 9th are cracking little par 4's, but the gem in my opinion is the short 7th.
even the surroundings are easy on the eye, and you would never know you were in such a built up area.
Yarrow Valley in Chorley has long been a well liked par 3 around these parts, but it cannot hold a candle to Porters Wood in any respect!
