What the club says: Oughterard Golf Club was founded in 1974 as a nine hole course which developed over the years to eighteen holes.

In 1997 major reconstruction works were carried out which included the lengthening of many of the holes, the creating of many features including lakes, ponds and rockeries and the construction of the new club house facility. This has resulted in transforming Oughterard Golf Club into one of the most challenging golf courses in the region.

The course is best described as a Parklands course with traditional Limestone walls a main feature throughout the golf course. It comprises of 18 championship holes that are lined with mature native Irish trees, including Oak, Hazel and Birch. It is an excellent test of golf, with numerous water features, sand bunkers etc. that are strategically placed to protect the par of the course.

The course is situated between Lough Corrib to the East and the Connemara Mountains to the North and North West to give a truly spectacular setting.

Ate my words

Played here around 18 months ago when every hole was like a bog and it was a dreadful experience so was not looking forward to another 18 holes with borrowed clubs as I flew over from the UK. Well......what a difference some sunshine can make. The course was in lovely condition and whilst there was not a lot of run-on, I thought it added to the challenge of the course. Played early, before a tournament got under way, so very quiet and I could really appreciate how scenic the course was from so many holes. Thoroughly enjoyable helped by a 92 with a WHS 17 handicap (if only I hadn't used that 3 wood twice, could have been 88) and I look forward to returning. Nice to find a couple of high pressure air pumps to clean off. The only slight fly in the ointment was that restaurant was meant to open at 11.30 but, despite gaining access on time, no staff appeared so we left empty stomached. Any members we met were very friendly and chatty, and whilst 30 euros for a round as a guest is good, I may think twice at 60 Euros for a non-member solo round. Overall highly recommended.

It is worth checking out their Open Days and when these are (usually Thursdays) as green fees are only 20 Euro compared to 35 Euro for a normal round. Stunning course kept very well and deceptively difficult. Well worth playing!
