What the club says: The Donald Steel designed Mill Ride opened for play in 1990 and is often described as having the characteristics of both links and parkland styles. Set in the grounds of a 175 acre private estate, the course winds itself expertly around seven lakes and has matured beautifully over the last fifteen years. Host to many championships including events on the European Seniors Tour and the Southern Region PGA Championship, this challenging course is also a regular hang out for lots of top European Tour golfers. The par 3 11th hole is one of the finest in Berkshire; at 175 yards over water with a shallow green, it is a genuine card wrecker.

Drainage poor

I know there's been a lot of rain this year but buggies still not allowed. When you're 65+ it can be difficult carrying clubs or dragging a trolley round. Drainage is poor on this course unfortunately and quite a few bunkers have no sand. This course is brilliant when dry but needs a lot more work on sorting the drainage.

A good challenging course. Its the first time i have played it and would return for a round when the weather is better. The course was a bit boggy when i played early December. Facilities good.

Challenging course

Challenging course for high handicappers but still manageable. Par 3s can be awkward especially those over water. The course fairways and greens are in great condition at the moment but there are problems with drainage after rainfall but they are addressing this and the course is improving year on year. Fairly open course so as long as you're not too wayward you shouldn't be searching for your ball very often. The greens can be difficult too, obviously depending where you land and the flag position but it makes thye game more interesting - especially if you get on the green for 2 and end up 3 putting!. Buggies generally not allowed after heavy rainfall so always check before attending the course if you need one, even if it's booked. Also check the new weighting board beforehand to see how many extra shots you get. There's a great halfway house where you can pick up drinks and snacks - always useful (and often necessary) if you're walking the course. I've played this course many times and love it.

Really hard course in great condition

Played in strong sunshine 24 degrees in June. Main problem as ever was it was really slow - five groups in front of us from Wilson Electrical golf day, and some had no idea. Left their buggy / bags at the front of the green, looked for balls in the rough following every tee shot etc. Course was good, greens not particularly fast or slow but true, some shots over water; all in all a nice course and I think pretty demanding.

Fantastic course, well maintained

Nothing i didn't like about this course. Greens and fairways really well kept considering all the dry weather we've had. Even the cafe on the 9th was open for refreshments.

Challenge

Have been touring a number of local courses recently which has included some prestigious neighbours. On first view the car park and pro shop appears to be in need of a little TLC, but the staff were exceptionally friendly and the feel of an old fashioned friendly members club prevailed, rather than the antiseptic corporate feel of some of Mill Rides more illustrious / better known neighbours. However, as soon as you arrive at the first tee everything changes. This is an absolute gem of of a track. The first provides a reasonably friendly start to the round from the tee and then toughens up for the 2nd / 3rd shot. This provides a pre curser for the rest of the round. Some tough, picturesque but fair holes follow, suiting players from single to high handicap. A whole array of shots are required and you will use every club in the bag! Fantastic, fair, challenging and pretty course that I will definitely play again. Watch out for the deer!! One small criticism is hat the bunkers lack a little consistency. No terribly, but enough to be noticed, but the course design more than makes up for this - a mix of parkland, water and inland links

A tough but excellent course

I do like this place, every turn is a different challenge, some of the par threes are excellent and 10 and 11 are two really good holes. Plus the finish at 17 and 18 is very tough. Greens were absolutely fabulous, course is only let down by bunkering which had various levels of sand from loads to very little.

Lovely course, great clubhouse. A proper golf course, with quicker greens than I am used to. Worth allowing a full day, to account for a breakfast, 18 holes, then some lunch in the clubhouse.

Haven't played here in many years and with the first rain in weeks the course has held up well with the greens running true if not fast. Still some bunkers with stones in but majority of them looked like they had good sand in them.

Mill Ride is a great golf course that should be doing better than it is. Played this week in the hot weather ball was running a mile not that made it any easier, this is a tough track. Great lay out, water on quite a few holes, bunkers a bit naff distinct shortage of sand. Still plays like a championship course just needs a bit of TLC.
