What the club says: Whilst golf has been played at Leven since 1820, the game dates back to 1846 on parts of these links with the current configuration coming into being in 1909.

From the start of the round the golfer will be conscious of the fairways running along the valleys between these old dunes; it makes for superb definition and a true test of links golf as the slopes and bounces of these natural obstacles come into play throughout the round. They are most noticeable at the first (where the green sits on a ridge plateau), the second, thirteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth. Elsewhere they come into play as obstacles to be played over at holes five, seven and ten and they provide the lie to steeply sloping greens at the fourteenth, fifteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes. The strength of the course lies in its fine variety of quality “links” holes with undulating fairways, revetted bunkers, wonderful approaches and large true running greens that provide a stern test for even the most accomplished putter.

At the end of it all lies one of the finest finishing holes in golf where two well struck shots are required to reach a target of quite epic proportions and slope over the yawning demonic Scoonie Burn which winds its way around the right and front of the green.

Incredible links course immaculately prepared with equal challenge and opportunity. A tough course as a new player to it with some blind shots. Very friendly people

A fabulous example of Links Golf. Classic undulating fairways, wispy rough, challenging pot bunkers, Leven had it all. Very friendly staff, lovely food, great all round experience

Great course for a round

Lovely course, bit tough for me and my high handicap.
Some fairways a little rough but greens great and true.
Would love to have done it a bit more justice

In April and so dry.

It overcast but not heavily and threat of rain. A slight cold wind that swirls. All the greens are fast and the fairways burnt out. Bunkers are all pot bunkers and very penalising. A real test and I went out in shorts. After 2 or 3 holes my hands were like ice but warmed up. Good start to the Fife '23 tour.

Leven Links is incredible! It's always in great condition and can be a tough test of golf. The wind was blowing when we played, but that just made it more fun. The 18th hole is also often referred to as one of the hardest holes in Britain.

Course Review

The layout here is decent but the condition of the course leaves a lot to be desired. The fairways are lacking grass and the tees are shabby. The greens are a 6/10 at best. The bunkers are by far the worst part of the course. Several should be roped off as GUR and the fact they are not leads to some farcical situations.

Would like to return......

Have to say that the fairways were terrible...but the pro couldn't have been more apologetic and fully explained the reasons. Hence would like to return as overall it was a varied course, with good greens and a nice mix of holes.

2nd time and even better

Played 4 ball end of July. Great weather and unusually not a drop of wind. Beautiful lay out and as per last time the course was in fantastic condition. I think it would be a real test in the wind. Sons food to finish over in the Leven Thistle clubhouse which was excellent and some good banter with the bar staff. The only downside is that I don’t stay closer as I would join this course in a heartbeat.

Good mix of holes running in two loops, few blind shots, generous greens, easy walk.
Sadly on the day we saw it, there was little else to recommend it. Greens were extremely bare and rock hard, I presume deliberately since other courses(especially next door Lundin) keep their putting surfaces somewhat lusher and more receptive in dry spells. A test, certainly, just not one I can imagine many average players would enjoy.
I didn't notice any bunkers with rivetted faces, despite the claims by the club. The sleeper bunker in front of the last green is dilapidated. The starters hut is scrufffy and next to a down at heel amusement arcade. The warm up nets are pathetic pieces of scaffolded rubbish, no range that I could see but a 40 yard chipping area that you wouldn't walk your dog on. A couple of people decided to cycle across the fairway (?) and people were walking across the greens nearest the clubhouses.
None of which should completely spoil your day, if as a visitor you had paid perhaps £30, but we were charged £70, and not on a weekend. Yes Fife is expensive, but at that price, most things really have to be spot on. I think the course has to decide if it wants visitors, because the four of us felt this was the biggest rip off in several years of touring British courses.

Great value links course on the Fife coast

Perhaps it was because the wind wasn't blowing and it was a beautiful early autumn evening but this seemed an ideal "starter" links course - true humps and bumps and sandy tight lies but forgiving rough and generous views of the route ahead, no real blind shots of other links courses. Really enjoyable course to plot your way around and with fabulous views across the Forth to the Bass Rock and Berwick Law and a huge sky all around, only impinged upon by the brooding Largo Law, this was great fun to play. The 457 yard par 4 18th with a broad tidal burn protecting the green was typical of the need to concentrate on the golf rather than the views all the way around!

Beautiful views, we got a fantastic day, pretty calm but the wind came on stonger and it became a harder course. Course is in in really good condition especially the greens.

Forgot my GPS and there's no markers on the course so that was really tricky in places.

Didn't go in the clubhouse but the pro shack is being maintained in time for next year.

Enjoyed the day, plan to return at some point
