What the club says: This traditional Members Club was founded in the early 1960's by five local businessmen who were keen to see a golf club in the City.

Having acquired the site of an old prisoner of war camp and bought some available fields, a nine hole course was opened in April 1961.

This facility was enlarged to 18 holes in 1973 and the opening of the course on the 4th July 1973 saw a famous challenge match between the then "Open Champion" Lee Trevino and top South African professional Hugh Baiocchi. Lee Trevino won the match with a score of 66 against a 67 by Baiocchi.

With the growth of the many trees on the course and the compact nature of the layout, the course demands straight driving and accurate iron play.

Top drawer course in very good condition. Tree lined fairways make it a test of accuracy over length & greens fairly slick

Challenging

Course in good condition, greens had a good roll. Challenging first 7/8 holes due to the tightness and you get punished by wayward shots into trees. Back 9 a little more open to the eye but more elevation changes that expected.
Clubhouse welcoming and friendly staff

Excellent course with more elevation change than initially expected. Good variety amongst the 18 holes and in good condition. Greens were good and rolled well. Very nice clubhouse and good food. Would like to play it again at some point.

I visit my golf friends in Ely once a year and always look forward to a round of golf at the Ely City golf club. Unfortunately, the course has degraded massively in just one year. It is more like a municipal golf course.
Tee boxes are dreadful, worn footpaths come to mind. The fairways are hard and have many bare patches everywhere, the bunker mounds are also covered with bare patches, the ponds are more reminiscent to cesspits. This was such a disappointing day!
This once stunning course has obviously got issues, they definitely need a lot of help in getting the fundamentals sorted, extremely sad, I won’t be returning!

Challenging but goregous

You'll be hard pressed the find a better course in Cambridgeshire. It's challenging and rewarding some long, narrow holes that really punish wayward shots but rewards accuracy off the tee. Some great holes such as the 2nd Par 3 which is a roughly 110 yard carry over water that sets up beautifully. Overall its enjoyable by all abilities and should provide a good time throughout.

Great Parkland course

This course is in the sleepy cathedral town of Ely, Cambridgeshire. I was playing in one ogf their open competitions and was lucky enough to play with the Captain and vice captain.
The fairways were lush and the greens fast and true which made for a fantastic days golf on a demanding course.
Well worth a visit

Fantastic course in great condition

The condition of the course and friendliness of the staff was exceptional. I played in a two ball in the Junior Open. When we caught up to members 3 and 4 games they allowed us through, no issues. They were jovial and complementary to us - pure class. Would have no hesitation recommending this welcoming and friendly club

Charming Parkland

Really enjoyed my visit to Ely City Golf Club
Really nice welcome in the pro shop which is well stocked.

The course is well laid out and is a fair test of golf. Whilst tree lined it is slightly forgiving from the tee as long as you stay away from the bunkers!

The greens are excellent and fairly paced too.

The layout itself has matured over the years leaving for a really enjoyable round of golf on golf course that offers a good but fair test.

Excellent course, friendly Pro.

Unfortunately encountered some 'negative attitude' from a member at the bar, after our round, I was sworn at for no apparent reason, then given the "finger"... genuinely clueless as to why?? apart from that, Excellent facilities.

Easy to loose balls when the leaves are on the ground. Can be a bit boggy but they have done a great job over the last few years making it better when long wet conditions. Most greens true and break to the river .

Nice welcome, but was lovely view down the first. Was away on business and walked on and got a game. £25 after 4pm, quite steep, but the course was worth every penny. Lush fairways and greens were a tad slow, but no different anywhere else, weather issues. Tight fairways, tree lined with well placed bunkers and water to add to the fear. Great thinks course, well placed tee shots will help you score well on this course.

Great course, Greens are in the best condition that we've ever had them in. Even for this time of the year. Few to many leaves off the fairway meaning losing a ball when missing a fairway is inevitable.

Played here a in early September with a couple of friends. Course was superb, greens absolutely brilliant they just have to be the best in Cambridgeshire. Don't play here unless you want a challenge, a great test of your golfing skills!
Only downside was the clubhouse catering, all our choices were poorly cooked, poorly presented and very expensive. Our advice to golfers, play the course and enjoy it, guaranteed. Hats off to the green keepers!
But then go to a pub in Ely for a meal.
Advice to the club, sort out your kitchen, get a new chef and look at your pricing. Surely the club members must have experienced this? If you need advice on catering come and visit Haverhill and sample the difference.
