What The Club Says

An easy walking par 72 course of 6,187 yards, Aldwark Manor is set in 120 acres of pleasant Vale of York parkland. Despite a fairly gentle opening, the course toughens up as you warm up with every hole being bordered by oak and beech trees. The major hazard though is the River Ure which meanders through the layout and comes into play on at least six holes. The signature hole, is the 18th hole.

Took ages to be served a very dried up bacon sandwich before starting. Also dried up was the course. Clearly not much watering going on. The greens were true enough but some still shoeing the scars of drainage works. Three par 3s in the first 5 holes isn't ideal and a very long walk along and across the river between the 1st and 2nd holes. Overall, the course doesn't feel well planned out. DIsapppinting.

Lovely scenery throughout. Most of the holes are very open with wide fairways and don't punish bad shots. Fairways were generally good enough although the greens were variable. Some good some average. Signs of new drainage ditches on several of the greens although they are recovering well and will benefit in the coming years. I found hole 14 to be the challenging with a drive off across the Ouse and a raised green with pond below. Hole 15 a par 3 over a lake was also noteworthy. 17 was also interesting as I didn't realise I could have driven over the mini hillock for a better view of the green. With more investment in the earlier holes this course could be great. Suggest narrowing the fairways, more bunkers around greens and leaving a longer cut off the fairways. There are signs of money being invested all over the course with new trees and plants. I had a very pleasant day at Aldwick although I think the £40 fee was a little over the top. The Bunkers Bar was very good with friendly staff and very nice food. I recommend the sausage butty ????.

The course layout has been altered and the changes are disappointing. The new holes are generally poor and the walks.between holes too far on a number of occasions.

High quality price low standard product

Visited today 2/5/24as a members guest - paid £28 for the privilege
Golf director - yes director stated, couple of holes closed, 4 in fact. However he must have forgotten that they also had 4 temporary greens. So 8 out of 18 holes not able to be played / played properly. Rather disappointing in reflection of price paid. Most of the fairways are soft underfoot, yes we’ve had a lot of rain, having the River Ure - running through the course doesn’t help and was always going to be a major factor/ problem. Holes 5,6,7,15,16,17 playable as normal. The rest as above ????. So 6 average holes to be played properly for £28 - do the maths
I appreciate that this is a new (ish) revamped course blah, blah, blah. However a considerable amount of work needs to be done to bring it up to the standard they think it is at and are charging for. At no point during my 3.5 hours at the course today did I see any green keepers working the course. It would appear that The management are concentrating on the hotel grounds. Not even sure that they have qualified green keepers as the bunkers are rubbish and greens are well below standard. Garmin still doesn’t work here still!!! Aldwark pull your fingers out.
Clubhouse - awesome, albeit hotel prices. The focus has clearly been taken away from golfing, which is a shame tbh. Will I play there again - a resounding NO not even for free. There’s better course out there for cheaper. There is simply no character whatsoever to golf here.

I’ve personally never taken the time to previously write a review , good bad or indifferent , this course however warrants me taking the time to do so.

Do not play this course , they have the audacity to charge premium green fee prices for a third rate course. The fairways are so tight you need to be a sub 4 handicapper to land on them , outside the fairway is 6 inches of thick grass that if your unfortunate to land in you’ll never find your ball again , I play off 11 and lost 14 balls playing 18 holes , it’s impossible and frustrating for what has the potential to be a great course , the greens are inconsistent , the bunkers have not been filled enough , the Green keeper without a shadow of a doubt is not a golfer.

Will never play again , would categorically not recommend , drop your prices , drop your buggy charges and sort your fairways and roughs.
