Why You Should Play Golf at Rosapenna

By: Liam Moore | Thu 24 Mar 2022

Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Links is at the forefront of Irish golf, and this luxurious resort boasts a peaceful environment with three first-class golf courses attached to the premises.

Situated on the cusp of Sheephaven Bay, the Old Tom Morris Links was completed in 1893, almost 130 years ago.

The second layout, Sandy Hill Links, was designed by Pat Ruddy and opened to the public in 2003 - 110 years after Morris’ grand design.

The most recent introduction is the St Patrick’s Links, an unbelievable golf course that was only opened in 2021.

To accommodate a wide range of golfers, there are three different room types for visitors to choose from and the appeal is further enhanced through a collection of excellent restaurants linked to the venue.

We will begin with the most pressing of issues and take a deeper look into the wonderful golf facilities that Rosapenna proudly boasts.

Rosapenna Golf

Golf

Golfers have been attracted to the estate since the late 19th century, when the Old Tom Morris Links was a highly revered layout - ranking 3rd in the British Isles.

Only two courses were deemed superior - The Old Course at St Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club - which isn’t bad company to be part of.

Since Morris’ iconic design, the course has been tweaked by James Braid and Harry Vardon, which represents the layout seen today.

Due to the reputation and quality of the original greens, only three were altered, whilst the other 15 remain untouched.

With detailed bunkering and stupendous putting surfaces, the Old Tom Morris layout is a classical, old-style links that packs a nasty bite.

Sandy Hills Golf Course is the alternative track and considering it opened in 2003, it introduced a breath of modernity to the entire complex.

The experience of Sandy Hills reflect a more modern links test and measuring 7,183 yards from the tips, if the swirling wind is up, this can produce one mighty test.

Although it did not receive the recognition that it duly deserved upon opening, it has now become apparent just how special this golf course is.

Rosapenna St Patrick's Links

Beau Welling, an American architect responsible for Quinta do Lago, was brought in to ease the difficulty of the layout in 2014, with the first hole being generated into a gentle par-5 - as opposed to the gruelling par-4 that stood originally.

Other notable adjustments include new fairway bunkers, bunkering removed from selective greens and reshaping some putting surfaces for easier approach shots.

The St Patrick’s Links was designed by Tom Doak. Sat on idyllic links land, the routing of the layout will take you through huge dunes, along the coast and then back through more dunes - although a gentler experience the second time.

The beautiful landscape, that features wide fairways, boasts outstanding views from all corners whilst providing a stern yet enjoyable challenge.

A truly unique presentation, the course will reopen from April 15th in 2022 and remain in operation throughout the golfing season.

St Patrick’s Links has further elevated the high-quality facilities that are found at this outstanding golfing hub.

Accommodation

Rosapenna’s general appeal is bolstered significantly through the luxurious rooms and lavish amenities that you’ll be equipped with during your stay.

There are three room types to choose from - Bay View Junior Suite, Deluxe Room and Classic Room - which should accommodate a wide range of visitors.

The Junior Suites are the premium choice, featuring private balconies that overlook the sensationally beautiful Sheephaven Bay.

By staying in the Junior Suites, guests will be issued complimentary access to Wi-Fi, safe, king-sized bed and a Nespresso coffee maker.

If you’re looking for spacious en-suite rooms, then look no further than the Deluxe Room that features both a double and single bed.

An added bonus of the Deluxe rooms is that everyone benefits from beach views - which would be particularly stunning during the summer period.

Finally, the Classic Room includes a comfortable double bed that is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and family rooms are also available in this style.

Rosapenna Hotel

Gastronomy

The eateries located on-site match the overall resort’s quality, which should come as little surprise considering the reputation of this fine Irish facility.

The Vardon Restaurant has been named after the six-time Open Championship victor and it specialises in local seafood that arrives in the kitchen daily.

The shellfish, a popular choice for visitors, is caught locally on the Atlantic Drive, whilst lobster, scallops and crab are also features of the menu.

The hotel’s bar celebrates another former Open Champion in Braid and it is the ideal location to reflect on the outstanding - or disappointing - round of golf.

The hub stocks an array of beverages, ranging from single malt whiskies to beers and spirits.

Additionally, a snack menu is provided but only between the times of 12:00pm to 6:00pm.

Leisure Activities

Accompanying the golf are a collection of activities such as snooker, where two full size tables are readily available.

The resort also boasts an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room - and these facilities are exclusive to hotel guests.

Rosapenna continues to augment the appeal of Irish golf, through three outstanding golf courses and an array of external activities.
