There was more disappointment for England’s Tommy Fleetwood as he once again came up short, this time at the FedEx St Jude Championship, the first of the PGA Tour’s three playoff events. But his fellow countryman, Justin Rose, claimed his 12th victory in dramatic fashion at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

The 45-year-old Englishman had lost on the first hole of a playoff with Rory McIlroy at The Masters, but this time the world number 20 held his nerve to take it to a third hole with US Open champion JJ Spaun.

Both made par on their first go at the 18th hole and birdied their second, before Spaun failed to follow suit after Rose claimed another birdie.

It gave Rose his 12th PGA Tour title while Fleetwood's wait for his first win goes on after he had gone into the final round of his 162nd event on the US circuit with a one-stroke lead. The world number 15, a seven-time winner on the DP World Tour, bogeyed the penultimate hole to relinquish a share of the lead and finish one adrift of Rose and Spaun.

The 34-year-old bogeyed his first hole of the day and had to settle for par on the next 10, but it looked as though he could finally claim his maiden PGA Tour win as he produced a run of three birdies in four holes from the 12th.

"I'm getting close, that's the good side of it," said Fleetwood. "On the back nine, I managed to get myself ahead, played some really good golf, putted really well.

"Justin and JJ have done great there and I just didn't do enough. I'm obviously disappointed. I was right in there with a chance, and it's hard."

Who is Justin Rose?

Rose was born on July 30, 1980 in Johannesburg but grew up in England. He first came to prominence when he pre-qualified as an amateur for the 1998 Open. There, he holed a dramatic shot from the rough at the final hole to finish in a tie for fourth place. Soon afterwards, aged 18, he turned professional and missed his first 21 cuts.

He earned his first European Tour card when he finished fourth at the qualifying school in 1999. The following season he failed to retain his card and had to revisit the qualifying school, where he finished ninth.

In 2001 he opened the season with consecutive second-place finishes in the country of his birth, South Africa. He went on to finish the year in the top 40 on the Order of Merit. He won his first professional event, the Dunhill Championship in South Africa, in 2002, and followed this up with three further victories in that year.

In 2003, Rose reached number 33 in the world rankings and earned enough money to claim his PGA Tour card as a non-member for 2004. That year, he played mostly in America on the PGA Tour, while also maintaining his membership on the European Tour. He slipped out of the top 50 in the world rankings but kept his tour card after earning in excess of a million dollars.

In November 2006 he won the Australian Masters to claim his first title for four years. He also enjoyed a top-five finish at The Masters in 2007 and reach 26 in the world rankings.

Rose won the European Tour Order of Merit title in 2007 after claiming the Volvo Masters.

His first success on the PGA Tour came at the Memorial Tournament in 2010 and he has since gone on to win 12 times on the PGA Tour, the most by any English golfer.

His crowning glory came when he won the US Open in 2013. He has also won 11 times on the DP World Tour and in 2016 won the gold medal at the Olympic Games. He has won two WGC events and represented Europe in the Ryder Cup on six occasions.

Rose is a former world number one who had slipped to 71st in the rankings and 77th in the FedEx Cup standings before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2023.

In April he finished level with Rory McIlroy after 72 holes at The Masters before losing in a playoff. He also finished sixth at the Scottish Open.

This was his 443rd start and he has made 345 cuts. Apart from his 12 victories, he has been second 17 times, third 15 times, in the top five on 72 occasions and in the top 10 on 116 occasions. He has PGA Tour career earnings of $73m. His victory takes him to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings.
