10 Outsiders to Watch at The Open 2023

By: | Mon 17 Jul 2023

There is almost always a surprise challenger at the majors. Here we look at the men most likely to emerge from the pack and bid for the Claret Jug.

Matthew Jordan

He has been a member at Royal Liverpool since he was a boy. Jordan is an underrated golfer and has plenty of local knowledge.

Matt Wallace

Sailed through final qualifying. The Englishman is a streaky golfer but is somebody who enjoys links golf and is capable of some very low scoring.

Branden Grace

Now plying his trade in LIV Golf, Grace famously became the first man to shoot 62 in a major at The Open at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout

The big South African has struggled for consistency on the PGA Tour, but Royal Liverpool should suit his game. Big hitter and a terrific iron player.

Thomas Detry

The impressive Belgian has been quietly going about his business on the PGA Tour. There are few better ball strikers in the game, although there are question marks about his temperament.

Ryan Fox

The New Zealander is trying to balance life between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. He enjoyed a sensational season last year and could easily contend if the wind doesn’t blow.

Thriston Lawrence

A proven winner on the DP World Tour, there are many who believe that the South African is destined for big things. A big hitter with a magical short game.

Robert MacIntyre

The Scot is desperate to make the Ryder Cup team and showed his class at the Scottish Open when only an inspired Rory McIlroy denied him victory on home soil. Another who thrives in windy conditions.

Thorbjorn Olesen

Back to his best and eyeing a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team. Has put his woes well and truly behind him and is finally finding some consistency.

Marcel Siem

The gutsy German is enjoying a career renaissance. He loves links golf and is a tremendous putter. Siem is a shotmaker and will hope the wind blows.

The oldest & most prestigious major, a trip to The Open is a must for every golf fan. From tickets and transfers to hospitality & golf, Golfbreaks.com can build the perfect package to help you experience The Open in style.
