Ashleigh Buhai capped a magnificent year by winning the Australian Open in Melbourne. Trailing 54-hole leader leader Jiyai Shin of South Korea by one stroke, Buhai carded a one-over par 73 to post a winning total of 14-under.

Shin struggled with the putter in a final round of 75, posting five bogeys and only two birdies to finish second on 13-under.

The South African was emotional as she putted for par to clinch the victory with her husband, David on her bag.

It's been a remarkable year for Buhai, who clinched her maiden major title at the Women's Open at Muirfield in August.

Player Profile

Buhai was born in Johannesburg in May 1989. She was the youngest player to win the ladies’ South African Amateur Stroke Play and Match Play double and the first player in 101 years to win the Ladies South African Open title three times. 

She turned professional the day after her 18th birthday and won the Catalonia Ladies Masters in 2007 in only her third start as a pro, becoming the youngest ever winner on the Ladies European Tour. 

She also won the ISPA Handa Portugal Ladies Open in 2011 and the South African Women’s Open in 2018. In 2020 she lost the Cambia Portland Classic to Georgia Hall in a playoff. She won the 2022 Women’s Open. Her previous best finish in a major came in 2019 when she finished fifth in the Women’s Open.

She averages 251.43 yards from the tee and hits 71.82% of fairways and 66.93% of greens in regulation. Buhai averages 29.86 putts per round and gets up and down from the sand 68.52% of the time.
