Tony Finau Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 25 Jul 2022

Article Updated in May 2023

TWELVE months ago it was Jon Rahm who saw off the challenge of Tony Finau to win the Mexico Open. But this time Finau produced a final round of 66 to secure a three-stroke victory over the world No.1. He finished the week on 260, a magnificent 24 under par.

Earlier in the season Finau won the Houston Open, and this win means he joins Rahm, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler as a multiple winner.

Finau held a two-shot advantage through 54 holes and birdied three of his first seven holes to keep the chasers at bay in the final round. He added two more birdies on the back nine before cruising home.

“I am very happy just with the four rounds I was able to put together,” Finau said. “And I knew today was going to be a tall task going against Jon with the form that he's in. I was really put to the test and came out on top, which feels great.”

“It seems no matter how many shots you're ahead, you're just so focused on getting in the clubhouse to win the golf tournament. When I hit my third shot on 18, I was like all right, I don't think I can screw this up now,” Finau said.

He also held off Brandon Wu, who held a share of the lead after starting off five under through seven holes. But Wu the eighth and then took a ruinous double-bogey at the 10th.

Player Profile

Finau was born in Salt Lake City in September 1989. He turned professional at the age of 17, plying his trade on several mini tours. He competed in The Big Break on the Golf Channel in 2009 and progressed to the Web.com Tour in 2014, finishing eighth in the money list to gain his PGA Tour card. His maiden victory came at the Puetro Rico Open in 2016. He has 10 top-10 finishes in the majors and is a two-time Ryder Cup player.

After his Puerto Rico win he had to wait six years for another victory and then won the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic in successive weeks in July 2022. He also won the Houston Open in November 2022.

After winning once in his first 188 starts on the PGA Tour, he has now won four times in his past 18 starts. The Mexico Open was his 229th start on the PGA Tour and was his sixth win. He has finished second 10 times and third on three occasions. He has achieved a remarkable 58 top-10 finishes.

During the current season he has only missed one cut. He started the Mexico Open in 16th place in the world rankings and 11th in the FedEx Cup standings. His win takes him to fourth in the FedEx standings and 11th in the world rankings.

He has won $36,602,853 in official prize money. He has represented the USA in the Junior Ryder Cup, the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.

Finau is married and has five children and has admitted that he struggles to be separated from his family.
