Tony Finau Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 25 Jul 2022 | Comments

UPDATED: Monday 14th November 2022

THERE was a six-year gap between Tony Finau’s maiden victory and his second. But after winning in successive weeks in July 2022 on the PGA Tour, the 33-year-old American has clearly developed a taste for it.

He secured his fourth success at the Houston Open with a dominant display - and the outcome was never really in doubt after he opened with rounds of 65 and 62. You should know that his 62 included two dropped shots and he hit just eight fairways.

Finau closed with a 68 for a 16-under-par winning total, beating rookie Tyson Alexander by four strokes.

“In a position to win a tournament, you want to know what you’ve got to do,” Finau said. “It was different nerves, I’ve never been in that position before where I was that far in front. I mean, I could get used to that, that’s a nice feeling to have. But I tried to just stay present and know that there’s still a lot of golf to be played, and I thought I did a pretty good job of that.”

Who is Tony Finau

Finau was born in Salt Lake City in September 1989. He turned professional at the age of 17, plying his trade on several mini tours. He competed in The Big Break on the Golf Channel in 2009 and progressed to the Web.com Tour in  2014, finishing eighth in the money list to gain his PGA Tour card. His maiden victory came at the Puetro Rico Open in 2016. He has 10 top-10 finishes in the majors and is a two-time Ryder Cup player.

After his Puerto Rico win he had to wait six years for another victory and then won the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic in successive weeks in July 2022.

He began the Houston Open ranked 15th in the world and with no standing in the FedEx Cup after missing the cut at his one and only start in the new season, at  Mayakoba.

After winning once in his first 188 starts on the PGA Tour, he has now won three times in seven starts.

He averages 305 yards from the tee and hits 58% of fairways. He hits 70% of greens in regulation and records 4.04 birdies per round. His scoring average in 2022 is 69.949 and he averages 29.14 putts per round.
