Golfers Describe Get Golf Fit Experience

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 21 Sep 2020

Enhanced flexibility, rotation and general fitness is an integral part of playing better golf, something we are continually understanding better. Whether you are competing for major championships or just want to improve your handicap, getting your body working effectively is a pathway to greater consistency on the course.

This year, Golfshake teamed up with Jon Ship, fitness expert and founder of JS Golf Fit, to launch a 4-Week Get Golf Fit Programme, engineered to help you become Fitter, Stronger, Faster.

Showcasing the benefits of following this structured regime, the Golfshake Ambassadors began their own journey, something timely ahead of the spring lockdown that was introduced throughout the United Kingdom in March. This unique period provided golfers with the chance to follow the series and emerge in shape to play better golf.

Months later, we surveyed those 2,000 golfers who initially signed up for Get Golf Fit, collecting their views on the process and benefits they have seen. None have left more positive feedback than our very own Mel Davies, as described in his feature How to Reach Single Figures - A Journey

Each week in the series, Jon shares and demonstrates a range of exercises, which he then recaps before moving onto another stage, where the workouts required change, all of which is designed to encourage flexibility and to create effective movements in the swing for more speed.

(Become Fitter, Stronger, Faster)

Reflecting on the layout of the series, here are some comments from the Golfshake Community.

"I felt it was very well structured."

"Was able to stretch more easily and increase flexibility."

"Very easy to follow, not too strenuous but helped keep my body loosened up."

"I found it manageable and did experience greater effort required in the latter part of the programme as expected."

"I found them easier to do as my body and muscles adjusted."

"Well laid out and simple to follow. Very useful."

Most of the 2,000 had completed all or the majority of the programme, but the only real test of the series would be analysing the results, which we're delighted to see have been positive from those who followed the exercises closely. We asked the golfers to describe what benefits they have experienced since returning to the golf course.

"Have been able to complete the round without getting as tired before the end."

"Improved hip rotation getting better distance and accuracy."

"I can make a better shoulder turn."

"I'm finding shots easier to hit and more confidence in the shot. Less tightness in my muscles."

"I am definitely hitting the ball further and I actually won a club competition this week."

Well, it's hard to argue with that feedback!

However, if you haven't yet signed up and started your own golf fitness journey, the series continues to be available. If you have physical limitations or time struggles, you may be unsure whether it's worth the effort to follow the programme, so we asked the golfers to express their message to others who may be considering participating in Get Golf Fit.

"Make the effort no matter what your age or ability as you gain depending on how much you put into it."

"I was a bit sceptical at first as there was no golf due to the pandemic. I stuck it out and benefited from the results. I am continuing the exercises because I feel the improvement in my game and my general flexibility."

"I believe it is a great help getting your body flexible. I am not getting the post-round stiffness any more. Will definitely be keeping up with the routines."

"As a golfer over 60, I would recommend older golfers to do regular exercise to keep up their flexibility and fitness and therefore enjoyment of the game."

"Do give this very manageable regime a try and measure the differences to see how effective it can be."
