What The Club Says

The splendid golf course at Vidago Palace is a Cameron & Powell redesign of an original Mackenzie Ross 9, dating back to 1936. Today, the upgraded course meets USGA specifications, having been transformed into an international championship standard par 72, retaining the integrity of the original design and faithfully reflecting the aesthetics, playability, spirit and character of the site.

Features include elevated tees and greens, strategic bunker positioning and greens that demand a sharp eye to read the slopes. As a result, Vidago Palace Golf Course will delight and challenge the most seasoned player.

The course is one of dramatic contrasts which are united by a singular respect for the surrounding nature. Pathways and retaining walls use local stone and centuries-old trees have been preserved wherever possible. The first holes are played in a forested and relatively flat valley floor; the later ones in open expanses with magnificent vistas and awe-inspiring views of distant hilltops and villages. All 18 holes represent a challenge and each of the last 9 is distinctly different from the previous one, so that golfers can test and enjoy their full range of strokes.

We stumbled across Vidago Hotel on Golfbreaks and to be honest I booked this break on the basis of the hotel pictures. Only the one round of golf I was able to get away with on a spa weekend anyways...\We set off that afternoon with trolleys - not buggies, course looked reasonably nice walking - and the first few holes were indeed lovely, if reasonably big holes and distances. I put my tiredness down to metres rather than yardage, by the 10th hole, only to find out that this is where it started getting hilly. \Hole 11 sharp and steep dogleg right, 12 a deceptively large green steeply beneath your first shot. 15 a long sweeping par 5 and then you arrive at the 3 hole crux. \16 a vicious dog leg left and I was beginning to regret my choice of trolley over buggy. Getting to the 17th tee-box was like climbing to base-camp, but what a panoramic view, if only I\'d not had such a fatigue in my swing with driver - carry the crest and you can have a very good second shot, but birdie would still be a challenge here. The 17th hole is so far below your approach shot you can forget about yardage and hope for the best. 18th to finish is a joy with low margin for error. Clubhouse drink never refreshed my thirst so well. A big friendly monster of a course with some delightful holes.
