Well Run and Maintained Municipal Golf Course
Some golf trips are built around one great course. This one was built around variety, and Gaston County, North Carolina delivered it in a way I didn't fully expect. Over a few days, I played a laid-back nine-hole track where tee times aren't required, a historic Donald Ross design quietly grinding out good golf since the 1930s, and a private mountain club with a restoration story dramatic enough to make you forget you're just there to play golf. Three completely different personalities, all a short drive apart in the shadow of Charlotte.Catawba Creek Golf Course, formerly Gastonia Municipal, is a par-70, 18-hole layout with three sets of tees, a driving range, and a practice putting green. Legend holds the original layout was the work of Donald Ross, later updated by Rich Mandell, with the course opening in 1935. Playing 6,172 yards at a 69.5 rating and 130 slope, Catawba Creek rolls through fairways with modest elevation changes that set up a handful of blind shots, something you'll feel firsthand on the third tee.
Catawba Creek carries only two par 5s, but the par 3s are the real stars: four of them, playing 200, 210, 182, and 169 yards, with back-to-back par 3s at 16 and 17 a novel touch you don't see often. The 17th is the standout, 169 yards from the back tees up to a green perched atop a hill. Miss it off the tee, and you're staring down a genuinely tough up-and-down, one of the more nerve-wracking moments of my trip.
If you're plotting a Gaston County golf trip of your own, follow the same order I did: Cherryville first for an easy warm-up, Catawba Creek next for history and sneaky-good par 3s, and Cramer Mountain last- if you can arrange access - the kind of finish that sends you home already planning a return trip.
