What the club says: Above the bay of Machico, where the first Portuguese sailors disembarked, lies the Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra.

The original course, constructed in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones. He created a spectacular and completely new 27 hole course integrated into one of the most beautiful locations created by nature.

Here, golf and nature live in perfect harmony with sport and the environment. Be it competition or pleasure, the passions of those who play at Santo da Serra are always satisfied.

Holes 2, 3 and 4 of the Machico Course are unforgettably ingrained in the memories of those who have played there.

The Machico and Desertas Courses are those usually used for the Madeira Island Open whilst the Serras Course, mildly flat, maintains the same level of play.

With four optional tees at each hole, the player is offered various levels of play enabling straightforward, relaxing rounds as well as more challenging ones.

Great views

Great course fantastic views of Atlantic Ocean and surrounding area. Quite high up in the mountains so can be cold but well worth it.

Lovely mountain course

There are only 2 courses on Madeira Island, with a further course on one of the smaller islands. Both courses on Madeira are very mountainous, and you will need to be very fit to walk the courses. A number of our group walked the first round, but ALL decided to take buggies for the remaining 4 rounds; 2 here and 2 rounds at Palheiro.

The Santo da Serra course is laid out over 3 sets of nine holes, being the Manchico, Desertas and Serra nines. When we played (mid-September 2021), the Manchico course was closed as there was considerable ground work being carried out, including various drainage work, digging lakes and what appeared to be re-laying of tees. This was a pity, as apparently Manchico is the most picturesque of the three sets of nine. We also had hollow coring having been carried out, and top dressing going on, which meant the 18 holes we played was not in the best of condition. We played 3 times in the course of our week, and the first day was most disrupted by the work, so much so that we were given our drinks free following various complaints, and were also given free buggies for our second round, by which time the top dressing of very black volcanic sand; had mainly been soaked into the greens.

The courses we played, Desertas and Serra are well laid out over the available terrain, with very different holes through-out. Serra is more inland and slightly flatter, but still including some lovely views, and the Desertas nine had a number of views over the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.

Facilities within the clubhouse were good. Although signage in Portuguese did mean we were unsure whether the changing rooms were open!

Value for money ? this was all part of a package, so I can't judge, but talking with a couple at the airport who had hired clubs etc, they quoted Euro 140 for two of them with buggies and an afternoon tee time which was cheaper that morning tees. The buggy cost Euro 36.

Pace of play was acceptable and was only slowed by those who chose to walk. With us all in buggies on our second round, we completed play in 3 ? hours.

Friendliness and hospitality - We were made to feel very welcome, and our complaints about the state of the course on our first round were handled very well.

Course conditions ? As already stated, hollow coring and top dressing had been carried out which detracted from our first round, but obviously needs to be done, and was evident but not intrusive when we played out next two rounds. Fairways were not great, but this is down to a lack of rain. Bunkers were heavy volcanic sand, and therefore more difficult to play out of, and we also had some rain which compacted the sand to make the problem worse.

Practice facilities included driving range, and putting and chipping greens.
Food and drink were very reasonably priced, and quite substantial, and enjoyed by all of our party who ate/drank.

Great course, worth visiting

Views are spectacular and course in good condition. 27 holes here but one loop was closed for irrigation. Very welcoming in the club house and good menu at reasonable prices. A buggy is not a necessity even though it is quit hilly but not outrageously so.

Though it´s an excellent course with unbeatable views, the pitch was extremely dry.
We had a good discount ( about half price ) i guess that for that reason
