What The Club Says
Palheiro is no doubt a difficult golf course, with tree lined, narrow fairways and bunker surrounded greens. The course also offers magnificant views of Funchal harbour and the Atlantic Ocean, which can be seen from many of the fairways and greens. The greens are quick and the fairways are fairly hilly so a buggy may be required.

Great mountain course
We played this course twice on a week-long golfing break to Madeira. The opening hole (a dogleg with a very uphill tee-shot) does not inspire, but the course improves very quickly, and I thought there were some dramatic holes which I really looked forward to playing on our second round. There are a number of ?blind? tee shots, so second time round it was far easier to judge where you wanted to put the ball.Club and facilities ? these were nicely laid out, and we had quite a stunning view over Funchal and the harbour as we sat on the terrace after our round.
Value for money ? I can't really judge, as both rounds were part of a package. Additional costs were the buggy for Euro 36, which I considered was a necessity bearing in mind how up and down the course is. I had soup after the round, which I thought was good value, but a number of our party said their food was almost double the cost of the same item at Santo da Serra.
Pace of play ? all of our party had buggies, so pace of play was very good, except where wayward shots meant time was spent looking for balls.
Friendliness and hospitality ? everyone we interacted with was very chatty and willing to help, and spoke very good English. The only thought here was that the tees had been moved 200 yards down the fairway on one hole (16th), and the starter never mentioned this before we teed off.
Course conditions ? greens and tees were good, but fairways not that good as apparently there had been a lack of rain recently. Bunkers were volcanic sand, and therefore very heavy, and had been compacted by what rain they had received.
Practice facilities ? other than a putting green, these were not evident, although they may have been available.
Food and drink were good quality, although as commented on under value for money; some dishes seemed a little on the expensive side.

Challenging Palheiro
Great course and very challenging. Greens difficult to hold on landing ball. Challenging approaches to greens very undulating(Round played: Aug 2019 - Score: 96 Handicap: 17.3)
