What The Club Says
Wanstead Golf Club was established in 1893 and offers a warm welcome and a challenging 18 holes. The Course is set in beautiful parkland and has hosted many of the major events in the Essex County calendar and is the home of the prestigious Armitage Cup. You will need a handicap certificate and knowledge of golfing etiquette, but we guess you would expect that from a long established club! Ample Car parking or if travelling from the City only 5 minutes walk from Wanstead station on the Central Line

Poor condition
Fairways very patchy greens not great. I remember wanstead 10-15 years ago always had great greens. The bot mowers are not as good cutting uneven and lots of bad lies on fairways. Should be preferred liesReviewer Rating

A heritage course reborn with modern ambition
A heritage course reborn with modern ambitionThere are golf clubs that quietly exist, and there are those that reimagine what a members’ club can be. WGC London, the revitalised Home of Wanstead Golf Club, belongs firmly in the latter category.
Set in the heart of East London’s green corridor, the course blends over a century of heritage with a bold, modern vision. From the moment you pass through the new entrance and take in the rolling fairways framed by mature woodland, it’s clear this is no ordinary city club.
Course & Setting
The layout retains the timeless charm of traditional parkland design, yet under recent stewardship it has been elevated through significant course improvements. Drainage and irrigation have been upgraded using modern agronomic techniques, bunkers rebuilt with pure white China clay sand, and new teeing complexes — including exhibition and academy tees — introduced to enhance playability for all levels.
The greens are consistently quick, true, and beautifully presented. Each hole feels individual — framed by oaks and silver birch, with subtle elevation changes and clever risk-reward moments that demand strategy as much as skill.
Clubhouse & Experience
The clubhouse has been transformed into a warm, stylish social hub that rivals London’s boutique venues. The Sports Bar and Players’ Lounge flow seamlessly into a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the 18th green — an ideal setting to unwind post-round. Multiple Sky feeds allow guests to enjoy football, F1, and golf simultaneously — a detail that reflects the club’s thoughtful attention to member experience.
Every corner of WGC London blends history with innovation. Digital signage, interactive member screens, and upcoming TrackMan-powered golf pods hint at the club’s forward-thinking DNA, while restored honours boards and original memorabilia preserve its proud heritage.
Community & Culture
What truly defines WGC London is its people. The club is deeply community-driven, welcoming local golfers, societies, and families alike. Volunteer working groups, member-led projects, and open communication create an atmosphere that’s refreshingly transparent and inclusive. It’s a genuine members’ club — not just in name, but in spirit.
Verdict
WGC London stands as a case study in how to revive a heritage golf club without losing its soul. It’s traditional golf, reimagined for modern life — proud of its past, ambitious about its future.
A must-play for any golfer seeking authenticity, charm, and a glimpse into the future of member-led golf in the capital.

Tight course, perhaps too tight
The very friendly pro explained the oddness of the layout and didn’t quite believe until I experienced it. The first and last fairways crossing, the shleps between 1st/2nd, 5th/6th, 16/17/18, the overlaying fairways of 3rd/4th. Definitely some interesting holes but wouldn’t like to play when busy. Course very dry with grass struggling on nearly all fairways, greens in reasonable condition. Overpriced.Reviewer Rating
