What The Club Says

Childwall presents a very tough test of Golf and can match any course in the area. With its James Braid design the course is not undulating and is very pleasant to walk. However, some holes do rise and this can affect the run of the ball. The art deco style Clubhouse has recently been extensively refurbished and it is complimented by a splendid new large patio, both of which add to the club’s overall friendly, hospitable atmosphere.

Embarrassing

Questions need asking what the club manager actually does. It is criminal how this course has declined. Been on a downward spiral since covid. Fairways poor, greens awful, bunkers beyond belief. If you like wasting £100 this is the day out for you.

Sad to see

For a course that holds itself in such high regard, the current state is an embarrassment. Yes, there has been unusual dryness but other courses in the area are not in such bad condition. (Lee Park, for one). Greens are inconsistent in terms of pace, in terms of grass height and in terms of trueness. Putting is a lottery. The bunkers have been bad for a while but never have been as bad as this, some have virtually no sand, some have what can only be described as builders sand and some have more stones than sand. Fairways are scorched and inconsistent. It's a real shame for such a classic old course to be in this condition. I only hope this review gets to be seen by those who can possibly do something about it

Childwall pitches itself as one of premier courses in area. Charging £100 green fee for non member guests. It truly is a cabbage patch currently. Fairways are substandard, greens and bunkers dreadful, Sympathy with members who are paying £1600 pa for such facilities. Clubhouse interior resembles a cruise ship bar area, It is saddening to see what was once a decent track suffer such managed decline. One can only wionder what the course manage and greens committee actually do. Avoid like the plague unless you like burning one hundred pounds

Lovely course in excellent condition

This is the first time playing this great course. The tees, the fairways and the greens were all in excellent condition. The first cut of rough is fair and the second cut of rough is tough to get out of but entirely fair as you shouldn't be that far off the fairway. There are a lot of well placed bunkers, if you can't carry them you can go round them and the bunkers were in good condition. The facilities are very good and the professional was really helpful with a good sense of humour. The bar is good and the staff friendly. One of the best clubs I have played.

Avoid course for a few months, maybe even rest of season. Greens are totally lost taken by either the golfing God's or more likely inferior course management .

Course has declined over recent months. Shoddy & scruffy with unplayable greens currently. CGC markets itself as one of the high end Merseyside courses with signing on fee circa £1250, annual membership around £1400 and visitor green fees around £70 . Simply not good value in its current condition. Various works have recently been undertaken including club house refurb and a somewhat bizarre patio re fit. Simply put this has resulted in the eye being taken off the ball course wise and perhaps reflects the desires of club officers and management to have an updated clubhouse/social facility at the detriment of the actual asset which is the course. Hopefully it will soon return to its former glory and provide a sound test for all levels of golfer.

Course is not in good condition currently. Greens are extremely substandard for time of year. More in keeping with a low end municipal. Bunkers are poor and fringes etc bald and will prove difficult for most golfers to play on. Some work has been seen with two new tees, 1st & 7th, 2nd green has been reshaped. A new patio area is now in place though sadly this does not flow with the aesthetics of the fine art deco clubhouse . Play if you must, though plenty of other courses in Merseyside area offer better VFM.
